Archivist Galford keeps the records of the Scarlet Crusade in the last corridor of the Scarlet Bastion, the Crusade's fortress inside Stratholme. His archive holds the Crusade's secrets, and the Argent Dawn wants it burned. He is the gatekeeper of two famous quests: the burning of the archive, which leads to the unmasking of the Grand Crusader, and the search for a painting that matters to Tirion Fordring.
Background
Duke Nicholas Zverenhoff of the Argent Dawn describes the Scarlet Crusade as blind zealots who have killed countless innocents in the name of the Light, and Galford as the one who watches over their history. The archive he guards records the Crusade's deeds, and the duke wants it destroyed.
Galford's alcoves also hide an object with a quieter story. The painting "Of Love and Family," a portrait of Tirion Fordring's family that a friend hid in the Bastion after Tirion's trial, hangs nearby. Finding it is one step in the long chain that reunites Tirion with his son.
Abilities
- Fire Nova: fire damage to everyone near him.
- Burning Winds: stuns one player and burns them for 1,600 fire damage over eight seconds.
Strategy
Galford is a caster with less health than most of the Bastion's bosses, about 19,500 in our data. The fight is mostly about the fire damage. Melee players take Fire Nova each time it goes off, so healers should be ready for group damage, and fire resistance helps. Burning Winds leaves its victim stunned and burning, so healers should watch for it. The corridor around him is full of crusaders, so groups clear it first.
After he dies, the book on his desk can be used to set the archive alight, which completes the Argent Dawn's quest and is the usual way groups continue toward the Grand Crusader.

Drop chances are from our database (patch 1.12). Since patch 1.4 he always drops at least one rare.

The [Tome of Knowledge] is a held-in-off-hand item for casters found nowhere else. [Devout Gloves] are the priest's Dungeon Set 1 gloves (see Tier Sets), and the [[forever:item:22897]] teaches mages their highest rank of Conjure Food.
Quests
- The Archivist: Duke Nicholas Zverenhoff at Light's Hope Chapel sends you to kill Galford and burn the archive. Burning the archive is the first half of the story: killing Grand Crusader Dathrohan reveals the demon behind the Crusade and drops the head that starts The Truth Comes Crashing Down.
- Of Love and Family: Artist Renfray, a ghost in Western Plaguelands, asks you to recover the painting from the Bastion and bring it to Tirion Fordring.
Later history
When Balnazzar killed the Scarlet Crusade in Stratholme after the Cataclysm, Galford was raised as one of the Risen and became Instructor Galford.
