Baron Geddon

Baron Geddon is a fire elemental lieutenant of Ragnaros and one of the most memorable bosses in Molten Core. His Living Bomb turns one player into a bomb that explodes after eight seconds, and calling out who had the bomb became a routine part of every Molten Core night. Like Garr, he guards half of the prison of Prince Thunderaan, so he can drop a Binding of the Windseeker for Thunderfury.

Background

Geddon is one of the oldest fire elementals, a being of living flame bound at the wrists by two heavy bracers. When Thaurissan tore Ragnaros out of the Elemental Plane, Geddon followed him. He had a hand in the betrayal of Thunderaan, Prince of Air: he and Garr ambushed Thunderaan for Ragnaros, the Firelord consumed most of the prince's essence, and the rest was sealed in a talisman that Ragnaros split between his two lieutenants. Geddon keeps one half and has never trusted Garr with the other.

Warcraft Wiki's account adds a rivalry with Majordomo Executus: rumor says the flamewaker took Geddon's place at Ragnaros's side, and Geddon has been waiting for Executus to fail ever since. The baron also trained Lord Incendius, whom he later sent out of the Core to guard the Black Anvil in Blackrock Depths, wary that his student might replace him.

Geddon patrols a tunnel near Shazzrah and guards the Rune of Zeth.

Abilities

  • Living Bomb: marks one player as a bomb. After eight seconds they explode for 3,200 fire damage to themselves and everyone near them, and the blast throws them into the air.
  • Ignite Mana: a debuff on everyone nearby that burns 400 mana every three seconds and deals damage equal to the mana burned.
  • Inferno: for eight seconds Geddon pulses fire damage around himself, and can't move or cast while he does.
  • Armageddon: when he's nearly dead, Geddon tries to destroy himself and take the raid with him.

Strategy

The classic plan is to pull Geddon back into Garr's room, where there is space to spread out. Raids arranged themselves in a wide semicircle or line at range, leaving the main tank and a few melee near him. When Inferno starts, every melee player, including the tank, runs out until it ends.

Living Bomb shapes the whole fight. The bomb carrier has to run away from the raid immediately and explode alone, ideally under a low part of the ceiling so the blast doesn't throw them high enough for the fall to kill them. Raid leaders on Ventrilo or TeamSpeak called out each bomb by name, and boss mods were written to warn the player. Mages and paladins can cancel the bomb with Ice Block or Divine Shield, and a priest's Power Word: Shield blunts the damage. A raid that panics and runs away from the bomb carrier instead stops all of its healing and casting.

Ignite Mana is dispelled from healers and casters, not from warriors and rogues, who don't use mana. Raids that killed him before Armageddon went off finished the fight with few losses; slower raids had to save cooldowns for the end.

Loot

Drop chances are from our database (patch 1.12). Geddon drops Tier 1 shoulders for most casters and hybrids.

Item Chance
[Bindings of the Windseeker] 3%
[Seal of the Archmagus] 33.3%
[Arcanist Mantle] 33.3%
[Felheart Shoulder Pads] 33.3%
[Lawbringer Spaulders] 30%
[Earthfury Epaulets] 30%
[Cenarion Spaulders] 30%
[Talisman of Ephemeral Power] 4%
[Quick Strike Ring] 4%
[Obsidian Edged Blade] 4%
[Fire Runed Grimoire] 4%
[Fiery Core] 14%

The left half of Thunderaan's prison is his rarest drop. The [Seal of the Archmagus], a caster ring, is another Geddon exclusive. He shares the non-flamewaker pool of rare epics, including the [Talisman of Ephemeral Power] trinket for casters and the two-handed sword [Obsidian Edged Blade]. Since patch 1.7 he has also dropped [Fiery Core], which the Thorium Brotherhood's crafting recipes use.

Quests

The Bindings of the Windseeker start the Thunderfury chain, which runs through Highlord Demitrian in Silithus (Examine the Vessel and Thunderaan the Windseeker) and ends with Prince Thunderaan freed, defeated and bound into the sword in Rise, Thunderfury!. A raid needs the halves from both Garr and Geddon, plus Ragnaros's [Essence of the Firelord] and ten [Elementium Bar].

Trivia

  • Warcraft Wiki's strategy notes recommend fighting Geddon where the ceiling is low: there are places in his area where a bomb carrier barely leaves the ground when they explode.
  • Geddon returned in Cataclysm, when Ragnaros attacked Mount Hyjal, and adventurers drove him back to the Firelands.
  • His model was updated in patch 8.0.1.
