Cookie

This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.

Cookie is the murloc cook aboard the Defias Brotherhood's warship in The Deadmines. He is the dungeon's one optional boss, a stirring rod in one hand and a pot of something foul in the other, and he became one of the best-loved minor characters in early World of Warcraft.

Background

In Ironclad Cove, at the far end of the mines under Westfall, Edwin VanCleef has nearly finished his juggernaut, the warship the Brotherhood means to use against Stormwind City. Its crew of hired pirates serves under the goblin Captain Greenskin and his tauren first mate, Mr. Smite. Somewhere along the way, a murloc became the ship's cook.

Nobody explains how. Later Blizzard material says only VanCleef knows why Cookie got the job, and that pirates will eat anything. Murlocs are the fish-men of Azeroth's coasts, and Westfall's shores are full of them, so a murloc in the galley of a ship built on that coast is less strange than it sounds.

Abilities

  • Acid Splash: splashes acid on players near him, doing nature damage every few seconds for half a minute. It can be cured.
  • Cookie's Cooking: Cookie eats some of his own cooking and heals himself. Interrupt it if possible.

When his health gets low, Cookie may run away and bring other pirates back with him.

Strategy

Cookie stands on the ship's lower deck, away from the main path to Greenskin and VanCleef, so groups can skip him.

  • Clear the pirates around him first. His patrol passes close to a pile of debris that players can't cross but enemies and some pets can, and pets have been known to pull the pirates on the other side by accident.
  • Once he is alone, focus him down and cure Acid Splash as it lands.
  • Stun or slow him when he gets low so he can't run off and gather help.
  • Going left around the ship after Mr. Smite, instead of right, lets a group clear Cookie's area before the last two bosses.

Loot

Cookie drops one of his kitchen tools.

Item Chance
[Cookie's Tenderizer] (one-hand mace) 65%
[Cookie's Stirring Rod] (wand) 35%

Cookie's Stirring Rod is a rare arcane wand usable from level 17, a strong upgrade for mages, priests and warlocks at that level, and the main reason groups stop for him.

Quests

No quest asks for Cookie. He shares the ship with Greenskin and VanCleef, whose head is the target of The Defias Brotherhood.

Later history

Cookie is one of the few Deadmines bosses whose story continued. In Cataclysm (patch 4.0.3a) he survives the adventurers' attack, joins VanCleef's daughter Vanessa in the rebuilt Brotherhood and is promoted to captain, and he returns as a boss in the new Deadmines. He also appears as a card in Hearthstone. The 1.12 encounter returned with World of Warcraft Classic in 2019.
