Death Knight Darkreaver
This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.
Death Knight Darkreaver is a fallen paladin who rides his corrupted warhorse through the Great Ossuary of Scholomance. He is not part of a normal run: he appears only when a paladin or shaman on a class quest uses a Divination Scryer in the basement of the Ossuary. Defeating him gave paladins their epic mount, the Charger, and shamans an epic helm.
Background
Darkreaver was once a celebrated paladin. The call of the Lich King seduced him, and he became a death knight; his corruption spread to his steed, which became an undead horse. The Scourge sent him to the Scholomance, where, in the dungeon below the Great Ossuary, he tried to bend the spirit realm to his will by summoning and corrupting spirits.
Two people noticed. Sagorne Creststrider, a shaman trainer in Orgrimmar, sensed the disturbance in the spirit world and looked for a shaman brave enough to face him. In Stormwind, Lord Grayson Shadowbreaker wanted to redeem the fallen horse, Darkreaver's Fallen Charger, so that a devoted paladin could ride it.

Abilities
- Blood Leech: drains health from everyone near him and heals him for up to three times as much.
- Cleave: hits his target and up to two others.
- Shadow Bolt: shadow damage on one player.
- Dominate Mind: takes control of a player for ten seconds.
Strategy
The encounter starts when the paladin or shaman uses the [Divination Scryer] in the heart of the Ossuary's basement. For about fifteen to twenty minutes the scryer calls up waves of accursed spirits that the group has to defeat, and in the paladin version, the paladin's judgements are especially strong against them. Only then does Darkreaver himself ride in.
Darkreaver is a demanding fight for a five-player group. Blood Leech heals him from everyone in range, so ranged players should stand back and melee should be kept to the tank and a few others. His Dominate Mind can turn a player on the group for a short time, so a crowd-control plan helps.

Quests
- Judgment and Redemption (paladin): Lord Grayson Shadowbreaker gives the paladin [Lord Grayson's Satchel] with the scryer. After Darkreaver dies, the paladin takes the [Charger's Lost Soul], redeems it, and returns to the Fallen Charger with the [Charger's Redeemed Soul] and the [Blessed Arcanite Barding]. The reward is the epic Charger mount.
- The Darkreaver Menace and The Darkreaver Menace (shaman): Sagorne Creststrider wants [Darkreaver's Head]. The rewards are the [Helm of Latent Power] and the [Skyfury Helm].
History
Darkreaver was added in patch 1.4 with the class quests, and patch 1.7 toned down how often he spoke in the dungeon. He was removed with the Classic version of Scholomance in patch 4.0.3a, when paladins began learning their mounts from trainers.
