Doom'rel

Doom'rel is the leader of the Seven, the ghosts of the Dark Iron sorcerers who helped call Ragnaros into the world, and the last of them a group faces in the Summoners' Tomb of Blackrock Depths. Speaking to him starts the dungeon's ghostly gauntlet: one by one, the seven spirits leave their places and attack, and when Doom'rel falls, the Chest of The Seven appears and the way deeper into the city opens.

Background

The Seven were Dark Iron dwarves of great knowledge and power, patriarchs of their clan. Centuries ago they joined the sorcerer-thane Thaurissan in the ritual that was meant to give the Dark Iron Dwarves a weapon against their rivals in the War of the Three Hammers. Instead it summoned Ragnaros the Firelord, tore open Blackrock Mountain and made the clan his slaves. The Seven died in the ritual. Their spirits remain in the tomb beneath the city, bound to serve the Firelord and the Dark Iron rulers, and they still seem to think his coming was a blessing.

Doom'rel speaks for them: "Our fate is the doom of all who face the Great Fire." Each of the Seven is named for a dark feeling with "'rel" added, and their legend is recorded on the Tablet of the Seven in the Burning Steppes, which the gnome Maxwort Uberglint pays players to copy in Tablet of the Seven.

The Summoners' Tomb event

The Summoners' Tomb lies between the Mold Foundry and the Lyceum. Like the Grim Guzzler, it starts out peaceful: the seven spirits stand in their places and do not attack. Before starting, any miner in the group with enough skill should talk to Gloom'rel, who can teach the smelting of dark iron (see Quests below).

When the group is ready, a player speaks to Doom'rel and chooses "Your bondage is at an end, Doom'rel. I challenge you!" He answers, "You have challenged the Seven, and now you will die!" From then on the event runs on a timer: every so often the next spirit becomes hostile and attacks the nearest player, whether or not the last one is dead. Doom'rel himself comes last. A slow group can end up fighting more than one spirit at once.

All seven are immune to curses. Their abilities vary by spirit: Vile'rel heals the others and should be killed or interrupted at once, Seeth'rel's Frost Nova and Blizzard punish groups bunched together, and Gloom'rel twice drops his threat on the tank, so he may suddenly turn on a healer.

Abilities

Doom'rel is a warlock:

  • Voidwalkers: he summons three voidwalkers to fight for him.
  • Shadow Bolt Volley: shadow damage to every player within 30 yards. Interruptible.
  • Immolate: fire damage, then more every 3 seconds for 15 seconds.
  • Curse of Weakness: reduces a player's physical damage for 20 seconds.
  • Banish: shuts a player out of the fight for 5 seconds.
  • Demon Armor: raises his armor, shadow resistance and health regeneration.

Strategy

The key to the event is speed. The group needs to kill each spirit before the timer releases the next, so damage matters more than anything else. Healers should save mana, since the fight lasts for all seven spirits with no break. Interrupts go to Vile'rel's heals and to Doom'rel's Shadow Bolt Volley. When Doom'rel arrives with his voidwalkers, the tank picks up the voidwalkers or someone banishes or controls them while the rest of the group focuses on Doom'rel. The event is the dungeon's second gauntlet; the first is the Ring of the Law near the entrance, where Gorosh the Dervish is one of the possible champions.

Loot

Doom'rel and the other six have no loot table of their own in our data. When Doom'rel dies, the Chest of The Seven appears in the tomb. It usually holds two of these rare items:

Item Type
[Wraith Scythe] One-handed axe
[Impervious Giant] Two-handed mace
[Blood-etched Blade] Dagger
[The Hammer of Grace] One-handed mace
[Ghostshroud] Leather helm
[Deathdealer Breastplate] Mail chest
[Legplates of the Eternal Guardian] Plate leggings
[Haunting Specter Leggings] Cloth leggings

Quests

  • The Spectral Chalice: Gloom'rel will teach a miner with at least 230 skill to smelt dark iron. Asking him summons the Spectral Chalice beside him, and the player pays by placing 2 Star Rubies, 20 Gold Bars and 10 Truesilver Bars in it. After that, Gloom'rel teaches Smelt Dark Iron, which only works at the Black Forge in Blackrock Depths.
  • Tablet of the Seven: Maxwort Uberglint wants a copy of the Tablet of the Seven, which tells their story.

Trivia

  • Warcraft Wiki points out that the naming of the Seven, a feeling plus "'rel", resembles the seven dwarfs of Disney's Snow White.
