Feralas

Feralas is a rain-soaked forest of giant trees on the southwest coast of Kalimdor, between Desolace to the north and Thousand Needles to the east. Its quests suit characters from about level 40 to 50. The zone holds the ruined elven city that became the Dire Maul dungeon, one of the four portals where the corrupted green dragons appear, and some of the best-known escort quests in Classic.

Geography

Most of Feralas is old-growth forest, with trunks wide enough to hold buildings and a canopy that keeps the ground in deep green shade. The coast to the west is the Forgotten Coast, and offshore lies Sardor Isle, home of the Alliance base. To the north, the High Wilderness holds Gordunni ogre camps and the ruins of Dire Maul. The Twin Colossals, two huge rock spires, rise in the northwest, and the Lower Wilds in the east slope down toward Thousand Needles.

Other landmarks include the Ruins of Isildien, the Grimtotem compound, the Woodpaw gnoll camps in the south, the Writhing Deep silithid hive, and Dream Bough, a great tree near Jademir Lake that is one of the four Emerald Dream portals.

History

Feralas was once part of the night elf empire. The Highborne built Eldre'Thalas here, a city whose ruins became Dire Maul; after the Sundering, a group of Highborne sealed themselves inside and fed off a captive demon for ten thousand years. In the present day the zone is contested ground: night elf Sentinels hold the coast while tauren of Camp Mojache defend the forest against the Grimtotem tauren, Gordunni ogres and Hatecrest naga.

Quests and notable NPCs

Alliance

Feathermoon Stronghold is led by Shandris Feathermoon, general of the Sentinel army. Her officers send players against the naga in Against the Hatecrest and look for a missing courier in The Missing Courier, a chain that leads into the Writhing Deep and ends with Rise of the Silithid, an early warning of the silithid threat that later grows in Silithus. Pratt McGrubben buys yeti hides in The Mark of Quality, and Angelas Moonbreeze sends players into the ogre camps with The High Wilderness.

Horde

Camp Mojache, a tauren village on the eastern edge of the forest, has a long list of quests. Rok Orhan starts the fight against the Gordunni with The Ogres of Feralas and The Gordunni Scroll, Hadoken Swiftstrider targets the gnolls in War on the Woodpaw, and Talo Thornhoof leads the hunt for the harpy matriarch in Dark Heart. The troll Witch Doctor Uzer'i runs a long series in which players shrink and capture creatures with a Muisek Vessel, starting with Hippogryph Muisek and continuing with Treant, Faerie Dragon and Mountain Giant versions.

Dungeons and world bosses

Dire Maul sits in the north of the zone and was added in patch 1.3. Its three wings (East, West and North) cover levels 55 to 60. The North wing is ruled by King Gordok, and a "tribute run" there, in which players leave the ogre guards alive, became a popular source of loot. The wing entrances and the ruins around them have their own elite ogres and satyrs.

From patch 1.8, Dream Bough in Feralas is one of four sites where the Emerald dragons Ysondre, Lethon, Emeriss and Taerar can appear. The others are in Ashenvale, Duskwood and The Hinterlands.

Getting there

Horde players usually arrive from Thousand Needles to the east or from Desolace to the north along the main road; Camp Mojache has a wind rider master. Alliance players fly to Feathermoon Stronghold or take the boat from the Forgotten Coast dock, since the stronghold sits on its island offshore. Thalanaar, a night elf outpost, guards the eastern border with Thousand Needles.
