Gehennas

This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.

Gehennas is a flamewaker overseer in Molten Core, a shadow caster who fights with two Flamewaker guards and curses the raid so that healing on them is cut by three quarters. He guards the Rune of Mohn, one of the runes that have to be doused before Majordomo Executus will appear, and he drops Tier 1 gloves and boots.

Background

Ragnaros pulled Gehennas and the other flamewakers out of the Elemental Plane soon after Thaurissan first summoned the Firelord into Azeroth. Warcraft Wiki's account places him near the bottom of the elemental hierarchy, envious of the lieutenants above him and trusted by almost no one, except his two guards, who hope to rise with him. He has a long-running feud with Lucifron, another flamewaker overseer who wants the same favor from Ragnaros.

He waits in a large cave past Magmadar's cavern, where the path through the Core turns toward Garr. The two guards with him are ordinary Flamewakers, the same melee elementals that roam the instance as trash.

Abilities

Gehennas uses shadow and fire magic:

  • Gehennas' Curse: reduces healing on everyone nearby by 75% for five minutes. This is the curse that defines the fight.
  • Shadow Bolt: a single-target bolt for 2,250 to 2,750 shadow damage.
  • Rain of Fire: fire falling on an area for a few seconds.

His Flamewaker guards hit hard in melee. They use Fist of Ragnaros, which stuns everyone near them for four seconds, along with Sunder Armor and a heavy Strike.

Strategy

Raids clear the cave first, then pull the two Flamewakers away from Gehennas, usually to the southwest, and tank Gehennas himself near the middle of the room. The two guards should be tanked well apart from each other. If they stand together, their stuns overlap and the melee spend the whole fight stunned.

The curse is the main problem. A tank cursed by Gehennas only receives a quarter of the healing cast on him, so the main tank gets a dedicated decurser, usually a mage or druid, who removes it the moment it lands. Other decursers should list the main tank first, then the melee. Players who don't need to be close stay out of his range, so that the curse, Shadow Bolt and Rain of Fire only reach the tank and his healers.

The guards fall fairly quickly; after that the whole raid turns on Gehennas, who takes longer. Rain of Fire is easy to step out of once players learn to watch for it.

Drop chances are from our database (patch 1.12). Gehennas drops Tier 1 gloves for some classes and boots for others, plus the shared flamewaker epics.

Quests

Gehennas always drops the [Hand of Gehennas]. Duke Hydraxis of the Hydraxian Waterlords wants it, along with the hands of Lucifron, Shazzrah and Sulfuron Harbinger, in Hands of the Enemy. The quest ends the chain that begins with The Molten Core, in which Hydraxis sends players into the Core to thin out Ragnaros's forces.
