Gul'dan
This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.
Gul'dan was the first orc warlock, the founder of the Shadow Council and the orc most responsible for binding his people to the Burning Legion. He sold out his mentor Ner'zhul, made the clans drink demon blood, and opened the way to Azeroth, all in pursuit of godlike power. He died before World of Warcraft begins, but the cults he founded and the corruption his skull left behind are still at work across Classic.
Biography
Apprentice to Ner'zhul
Gul'dan was born into the Shadowmoon clan on Draenor and grew up an outcast, then became the apprentice of the clan's elder shaman, Ner'zhul. The demon lord Kil'jaeden first worked on Ner'zhul in the guise of an ancestor spirit. When Ner'zhul began to doubt, Kil'jaeden turned to his apprentice, and Gul'dan eagerly agreed to serve. Kil'jaeden taught him fel magic, and Gul'dan became the first orc warlock, pushing his old master aside.
The Shadow Council
To steer the Horde, Gul'dan gathered other warlocks into the secret Shadow Council, with the two-headed ogre Cho'gall and the half-orc assassin Garona among his agents. He set up the brutal Blackhand as a puppet warchief and led the clans into the slaughter of the draenei. Then he brought the chieftains together to drink the blood of the pit lord Mannoroth. Only a few, like Durotan of the Frostwolves, refused. The blood gave the orcs strength and rage, and it bound them to the Burning Legion.
When the warlock magic had drained Draenor nearly dead, a hooded stranger came to Gul'dan: the sorcerer Medivh, possessed by Sargeras. Medivh offered him the power hidden in the Tomb of Sargeras in exchange for the Horde's help in conquering Azeroth, and together they opened the Dark Portal.

Coma, betrayal and death
Near the end of the First War, Gul'dan reached into Medivh's mind to steal the location of the tomb just as Alliance heroes killed Medivh, and the shock left Gul'dan in a coma. While he slept, Orgrim Doomhammer killed Blackhand and wiped out most of the Shadow Council. Gul'dan woke with only Cho'gall's Twilight's Hammer and a few loyal necrolytes left. To survive, he offered Doomhammer an army of undead riders, the first death knights, made by putting the spirits of dead warlocks into the corpses of fallen human knights.
In the Second War, Gul'dan betrayed the Horde. As Doomhammer prepared his attack on the capital of Lordaeron, Gul'dan sailed south with his Stormreaver clan and the Twilight's Hammer to raise the Tomb of Sargeras from the sea floor. Doomhammer had to send forces after him, which cost the Horde the war. Gul'dan entered the tomb, and the demons waiting inside tore him apart.

In World of Warcraft
Gul'dan does not appear in Classic, but his work does.
The Shadow Council's heirs
The Burning Blade, a demon-worshipping cult descended from the Shadow Council, troubles the orcs from their first hours in Durotar. In the Valley of Trials, the quest Burning Blade Medallion sends new players into a cave full of Burning Blade cultists. Later, Thrall's "Hidden Enemies" chain uncovers Neeru Fireblade, the cult's leader hiding in the Cleft of Shadow in Orgrimmar, and its offshoot the Searing Blade in Ragefire Chasm.
In Felwood, the Shadow Council itself survives in Jaedenar, where warlocks and demons work under leaders like Shadow Lord Fel'dan. Horde and Alliance players fight them in quests like Forces of Jaedenar.
The Skull of Gul'dan
After his death, Gul'dan's skull became a powerful demonic artifact. During the Third War, Illidan Stormrage consumed its power to kill the dreadlord Tichondrius in the forests of northern Ashenvale, and the skull's fel energy poisoned the land that became Felwood. In Ancient Spirit, the trapped spirit Arei says the skull of Gul'dan ensured that none there were spared.
Later history
- Gul'dan's skeleton, without its skull, lies in the Tomb of Sargeras, which players enter in Legion.
- In Warlords of Draenor and Legion, an alternate-timeline Gul'dan from a different Draenor became the Legion's agent. He was the final boss of the Nighthold raid in Legion.
Trivia
- Gul'dan was the main villain of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness (1995).
- His story is told in detail in the novel Rise of the Horde and in World of Warcraft: Chronicle Volume 2.
