Gyth

Gyth is the chromatic drake that Rend Blackhand rides in Upper Blackrock Spire. One of Nefarian's chromatic dragons, he breathes fire, frost and acid, and he carries the warchief into Blackrock Stadium at the end of the arena event. Players have to bring him down before Rend will fight them on foot.

Background

Rend Blackhand allied his Dark Horde with Nefarian and the black dragonflight, and together they set out to create a new breed of dragon, the chromatic dragonflight, which they hoped to unleash on the world. Blackrock Stadium, an arena in the Upper Spire, is where they test their creations on intruders. Gyth is one of the finished drakes, fully grown and Rend's personal mount.

The two are part of the same encounter. Players never meet Gyth without his rider, and he dies in the same fight as Warchief Rend Blackhand.

Abilities

Gyth uses a breath of each kind:

  • Flame Breath: fire damage in a cone in front of him.
  • Freeze: a blast of ice that stuns players in front of him for six seconds and keeps dealing frost damage.
  • Corrosive Acid Breath: nature damage over time that also lowers armor.
  • Knock Away: knocks his target back.
  • Chromatic Chaos: Lord Victor Nefarius can empower him, raising his chance to hit and reducing the damage he takes for five minutes.

Strategy

When the group walks into the middle of the stadium, the gate closes behind them and Lord Victor Nefarius appears on a balcony with Rend. Waves of chromatic dragonkin, Chromatic Whelps and their Blackhand Dragon Handlers come through the north gate. After the waves, Nefarius sends Rend in on Gyth.

Everyone attacks Gyth first. The tank keeps him turned away from the group so only the tank takes his breaths, and healers watch for the stun from Freeze. When Gyth's health drops low, Rend jumps down to fight on foot. A second tank picks up Rend while the group finishes Gyth, then everyone turns on the warchief.

A player who carries the [Seal of Ascension] can use it during the fight to call Vaelastrasz's spirit, which heals the group and, if used once Rend is on the ground, attacks Rend. Nefarius eventually banishes him.
