How Realms Work in WoW Forever

World of Warcraft: Forever has no realm list. Instead of picking a server, you pick a ruleset when you make a character, and you play in one big shared world with everyone in your region who picked the same one. Blizzard describes each ruleset as working like a "mega-realm".

Written before launch, from Blizzard's announcements as reported by the press (sources below). We'll update it once Forever is live on November 4, 2026.

The rulesets

Ruleset What it is Available
Normal Player-versus-environment: you fight other players only when you choose to At launch
PvP Open-world player-versus-player At launch
Roleplay For players who stay in character At launch
Hardcore One life: a character that dies stays dead in Hardcore After launch, date not announced

A character belongs to one ruleset. You choose it when you create the character, so pick with care.

Who you can play with

  • Same ruleset, same faction. You can group only with players of your faction on your ruleset. A Normal character can't join a PvP character's dungeon group.
  • Factions stay apart. Alliance and Horde can't group, as in the original game.
  • Your whole region. With no servers, everyone in your region on your ruleset shares one world, so your friends are never "on another realm".

Hardcore

Hardcore is closed off from the other rulesets. When a Hardcore character dies, you can move it to another ruleset and keep playing it there, including PvP, which is new for Forever.

What carries across rulesets

Collections and Legacy Points are shared across your account on Normal, PvP and Roleplay. Hardcore progress also counts on those three, but not the other way round: Hardcore's own rewards have to be earned in Hardcore.

Character names

  • Every character has two names, a first name and a surname.
  • Because there are no realms, a name is unique across your whole region. If someone has your name, you'll see "a character with that name already exists". Reports differ on whether that applies to the first name alone or the first-and-surname pair.

Early name reservation

  • Runs from October 27 to November 3, 2026, the week before launch.
  • Open to players who pre-purchased the Skyborne Heroic Pack, the Skyborne Epic Pack or the Warcraft Forever Collection. Beta access alone doesn't count.
  • You can reserve up to three characters per account, and finish their customization.

Launch

  • Forever launches on November 4, 2026, with no early access period.
  • Normal, PvP and Roleplay open that day. Hardcore follows later.
  • The beta ended on October 21, and beta characters don't carry over.
  • Blizzard hasn't announced any way to bring characters, gold or items over from other Classic realms.
