Instructor Malicia is a high elf necromancer who teaches in the Coven, one of the six classrooms around the Headmaster's Study in Scholomance. She is one of the six instructors who must die before Darkmaster Gandling will show himself, and her room has to be fully cleared for him to appear.
Background
Most of the Scholomance's teachers are undead, but Malicia is a living high elf who chose the Cult of the Damned. Classic gives her almost no story beyond her title and her class of students, the living cultists who come to Caer Darrow to learn necromancy. Her model was updated in patch 2.3, after the Burning Crusade.
Later expansions gave her more of a life. After the Cataclysm she leaves the school and runs field training for cultists at Malicia's Outpost near the Weeping Cave in Western Plaguelands, and Hearthstone made her the "Soulciologist" of its Scholomance Academy set.
Abilities
Malicia is a priest-like caster who keeps herself alive.
- Flash Heal, Heal and Renew: heals on herself.
- Corruption: shadow damage over 24 seconds on everyone near her.
- Slow: slows the attacks, casts and movement of nearby players.
- Call of the Grave: deals shadow damage to nearby players after 60 seconds. Patch 1.3 halved it.
Strategy
The danger with Malicia is the length of the fight, not any one spell. Her heals undo the group's damage, so interrupts matter: a rogue's Kick, a warrior's Pummel or Shield Bash, or a mage's Counterspell on every heal. Warcraft Wiki suggests using warlocks, hunters and priests to drain her mana, which leaves her nothing but her staff. Corruption can be cleansed by priests and paladins, and Slow is worth dispelling from the tank.
The Coven is also the one side room that must be completely empty of its students before Gandling will spawn, so groups clear it carefully.
Loot
Drop chances are from our database (patch 1.12). The six instructors share one loot table of Scholomance armor sets, and each also has a Dungeon Set 1 piece of their own.
| Item | Chance |
|---|---|
| [Shadowcraft Bracers] | 3.5% |
| [Necropile Robe] | 1.1% |
| [Deathbone Chestplate] | 1.1% |
| [Cadaverous Armor] | 1.1% |
| [Bloodmail Hauberk] | 1.1% |
| [Hammer of the Vesper] | 1.1% |
| [Dimly Opalescent Ring] | 1.1% |
| [Skin of Shadow] | 17% |
[Shadowcraft Bracers] are the rogue's Dungeon Set 1 bracers (see Tier Sets). The 1.1% items are pieces of the Necropile, Deathbone, Cadaverous and Bloodmail sets, which drop from all six instructors. The [Skin of Shadow] is a crafting material for leatherworkers and tailors.
Quests
No Classic quest names her. She counts toward summoning Gandling, and she drops a [Corruptor's Scourgestone] for the Argent Dawn.
Later history
Patch 4.0.3a lowered her to level 43. Mists of Pandaria removed her from the dungeon, and patch 10.1.5 brought her back with the Legacy of Scholomance.
