Jaina Proudmoore

This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.

Jaina Proudmoore is a human archmage, the daughter of Admiral Daelin Proudmoore of Kul Tiras and the founder of Theramore Isle in Dustwallow Marsh. A hero of the Third War, she is one of the few Alliance leaders who works for peace with Thrall's Horde. In Classic she rules Theramore and closes out the long Alliance quest chain about Stormwind's missing king.

Biography

Jaina grew up in Kul Tiras, the island nation ruled by her father, and was sent as a girl to study magic in Dalaran under Archmage Antonidas, who made her his apprentice. She knew Prince Arthas Menethil from childhood and the two became romantically involved as adults.

When a strange plague broke out in northern Lordaeron, Antonidas sent Jaina to investigate it alongside Arthas and Uther the Lightbringer. She saw the plague's source in the necromancer Kel'Thuzad and the cult behind him. When Arthas ordered the Culling of Stratholme, killing the city's people before the plague could turn them, Jaina refused to take part and left him.

Soon after, a mysterious prophet, who was Medivh returned from death, urged the humans of Lordaeron to sail west to Kalimdor. Jaina led a large group of survivors across the sea. In Kalimdor she met Thrall, and with the night elves under Tyrande Whisperwind and Malfurion Stormrage the three peoples held off Archimonde at Mount Hyjal long enough for the World Tree to destroy him.

Jaina's people then founded Theramore on an island off the coast of Dustwallow Marsh, a short sail from the new orc nation in Durotar. In Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, her father arrived with the Kul Tiran fleet and attacked the orcs. Jaina tried to talk him out of it, failed, and finally let the Horde fight him. Daelin was killed, and Jaina has carried that choice with her ever since.

In World of Warcraft

Lady Jaina Proudmoore stands in Foothold Citadel on Theramore Isle. She is a level 63 boss with more than 460,000 health, and her guards and the archmage Archmage Tervosh make Theramore a common target for Horde raids on PvP realms.

The Missing Diplomat

The biggest story Jaina is part of in Classic is the Alliance quest chain known as "The Missing Diplomat," which runs from level 28 to 38. It begins in Stormwind City with a vague report: a diplomat sent to meet Jaina in Theramore never arrived. Players follow the trail through Stormwind's back alleys, a bar fight with Dashel Stonefist, and on to Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands, where an informant admits in The Missing Diplomat that the Defias did not take a diplomat at all. They took the king.

The chain ends in Dustwallow Marsh, where players expose a traitor among Theramore's soldiers, Private Hendel, and defeat him in The Missing Diplomat. Archmage Tervosh takes Hendel back for questioning, and in the final The Missing Diplomat Jaina thanks the player and promises to keep them informed. She cannot thank them openly, she says, because the king's disappearance is still a secret. The full story of Varian Wrynn's abduction was not told in the game until much later.

Other quests

  • Vimes's Report: Captain Captain Garran Vimes sends players to deliver his report on the strange events in the marsh, and Jaina sends them back to keep helping him.
  • Jaina's Autograph: during the Children's Week holiday, a Stormwind orphan asks players to get Jaina's autograph.

Jaina gives no quests to the Horde, but Horde players in Dustwallow Marsh work against her city in quests such as Theramore Spies and The Theramore Docks.

Later history

Jaina's role grows a great deal after Classic:

  • In Wrath of the Lich King she fights Arthas again, now as the Lich King, and in the Halls of Reflection (patch 3.3) Alliance players escape from him at her side.
  • In patch 5.0 (2012), Garrosh Hellscream destroys Theramore with a mana bomb. The loss turns Jaina bitter toward the Horde for years. She becomes leader of the Kirin Tor in Mists of Pandaria.
  • In Battle for Azeroth she returns home to Kul Tiras, makes peace with her mother Katherine, and becomes Lord Admiral of the Kul Tiran fleet.

Trivia

  • Jaina's quest text in Classic misspells her surname as "Proudmore" in a few places, for example the objective of The Missing Diplomat.
  • In Classic, Jaina's Theramore is the only Alliance city in Kalimdor not run by night elves.
