Lord Incendius

Lord Incendius is a fire elemental lord who guards the Black Anvil, the sacred forge at the heart of Shadowforge City in Blackrock Depths. Blacksmiths need the anvil to make Dark Iron gear, and quests from both factions and from the Brotherhood of the Light send players after him, so he was one of the most-killed bosses in the dungeon. He was also a favorite target for small groups and soloists, who could reach him quickly and farm him for his bracers and quest drops.

Background

The game's later Adventure Guide says Incendius learned to use his power from Baron Geddon, one of Ragnaros's lieutenants in the Molten Core. The student grew so good at destruction that Geddon began to fear he would be replaced, and sent him out of the Core to guard the Dark Irons' Black Anvil.

The anvil is made of the purest dark iron, smelted with secrets the Dark Iron Dwarves share only with their most trusted smiths, and the clan treats it as holy. Any blacksmith who wants to craft Dark Iron armor and weapons has to work at it, which means getting past Incendius first. When he dies he swears, "I cannot be destroyed! By the will of Ragnaros, I shall be reborn!"

Abilities

  • Fire Storm: a pillar of flame that burns players in an area, then keeps burning them every 3 seconds for 30 seconds.
  • Fiery Burst: 510 to 690 fire damage to every player in an area.
  • Mighty Blow: a heavy melee hit that knocks the target back.
  • [[forever:spell:26977]]: cuts the fire resistance of every player near him by 100 for a minute. It was added in patch 1.10, and it counts as a curse, so mages and druids can remove it.

He is immune to stuns, Gouge, Blind and Garrote.

Strategy

Incendius's room is a circular platform above lava. Mighty Blow can knock the tank into one of the niches around the edge, or worse, so tanks fight with their back away from the drop. Players spread out to limit the damage from Fire Storm and Fiery Burst, and move out of the pillars of flame quickly.

Fire resistance was the key before patch 1.10. With 150 to 200 fire resistance, a rogue or druid at level 60 could solo him. The Curse of the Elemental Lord, added in 1.10, made that much harder, since it strips away 100 resistance at a time. Druids could still solo him because they can remove curses, and a rogue-and-druid pair could stealth to him, kill him and leave the instance in about five minutes. That made him a common farming target, limited mainly by the cap of five instances per hour added in patch 1.8. Players often mined the Dark Iron veins along the way.

Loot

From our database (patch 1.12):

Item Chance
[[forever:item:21987]] 100% (quest)
[Tablet of Kurniya] 100% (quest)
[[forever:item:22527]] 55%
[Cinderhide Armsplints] 25%
[Pyremail Wristguards] 25%
[Flameweave Cuffs] 25%
[Emberplate Armguards] 25%
[Ace of Elementals] 2%
[Essence of the Elements] 0.5%

Each of his four bracers is fire-resistant and has a random enchantment, one for each armor type. The [Ace of Elementals] starts the Elementals card deck, which players combine into the Darkmoon Card: Maelstrom at the Darkmoon Faire.
