Lucifron

Lucifron is a flamewaker lieutenant of Ragnaros and the first boss most raids meet in Molten Core. He fights alongside two Flamewaker Protectors who can mind-control players, and he curses the raid so that every spell and ability costs twice as much. In the early patches he also mattered for a very practical reason: he always dropped the book that teaches hunters Tranquilizing Shot, which the raid needed for Magmadar next door.
Background
The flamewakers are elementals of flesh and blood rather than pure fire, and they followed Ragnaros out of the Elemental Plane when the Dark Iron sorcerer-thane Thaurissan summoned him into Azeroth. Their ranks are full of rivalries. Warcraft Wiki's account of the encounter describes Lucifron as a schemer who has feuded with his fellow overseer Gehennas since their days imprisoned on the Elemental Plane, and who waits for any rival to slip so that he can rise in the Firelord's favor.
In the Core he stands near the entrance with two Flamewaker Protectors, watching over the cavern of the great core hound Magmadar, Ragnaros's favored pet. Unlike most of the bosses that follow, Lucifron doesn't guard one of the Runes of the Firelord, so he isn't strictly required to reach Majordomo Executus. In practice nearly every raid kills him on the way in.
Abilities
Lucifron is a caster who punishes a raid that bunches up near him.
- Lucifron's Curse: curses everyone nearby for five minutes, doubling the cost of their spells and abilities, whether they use mana, rage or energy. Mages and druids have to remove it constantly.
- Impending Doom: a magic debuff that deals 2,000 shadow damage to its targets after ten seconds unless a priest or paladin dispels it first.
- Shadow Shock: an instant shadow attack on one player.
His two Protectors are melee guards with a strong Cleave and Dominate Mind, which takes control of a player for 15 seconds. A mind-controlled warrior or priest in the middle of the raid can do a lot of damage before the effect ends.
Strategy
Raids usually clear the core hound pack nearby first to make room. The pull then splits the encounter in two: hunters pull the Protectors back toward a side cove, where off-tanks pick them up, while the main tank drags Lucifron the other way. Anyone not needed near him stays out of range. Both of his debuffs reach about 40 yards, so a well-placed raid can keep most healers and ranged attackers clear of the curse waves.
Dispelling decides the fight. Mages and druids remove the curse, starting with the tanks; priests and paladins remove Impending Doom from the tanks and healers and break the mind control on anyone the Protectors grab. Because the casters spend so much time decursing, rogues, hunters and warlocks do most of the damage. The usual order is to kill both Protectors and then turn on Lucifron. If the raid wipes before he dies, the Protectors come back.
The fight is easy once a raid is used to it, but it was an early lesson in how much of Molten Core depended on removing debuffs rather than on raw damage.

Loot
Drop chances are from our database (patch 1.12). Lucifron drops Tier 1 boots and gloves for several classes and shares a pool of rarer epics with the other flamewakers.

The [Tome of Tranquilizing Shot] taught hunters Tranquilizing Shot, which removes the frenzy effects that Magmadar, Flamegor and Chromaggus use. Every hunter wanted one, so Lucifron's book was the first thing many raids rolled on. The [Choker of Enlightenment], a caster necklace, was another early favorite. Shared flamewaker drops such as the [Sorcerous Dagger] and [Crimson Shocker] can also appear from Gehennas, Shazzrah and Sulfuron Harbinger.
Like every boss in the instance, Lucifron also gives reputation with the Hydraxian Waterlords.
Quests
Lucifron always drops the [Hand of Lucifron]. It's one of the four flamewaker hands that Duke Hydraxis asks for in Hands of the Enemy, together with the hands of Gehennas, Shazzrah and Sulfuron Harbinger. It closes the Waterlords' chain that begins with The Molten Core, and its follow-up, A Hero's Reward, rewards a choice of the rings [Tidal Loop] or [Ocean's Breeze]. The same Waterlords provide the quintessence used to douse the runes that summon Majordomo Executus.
