Magister Kalendris

Magister Kalendris is the ghost of a Shen'dralar priest who carried out Prince Tortheldrin's massacre of his own people. He murdered many of them without a second thought, until one of his victims struck back and killed him. His spirit still roams the west wing of Dire Maul, defending the prince's rule with shadow magic.

Background

The Shen'dralar were the Highborne mages who survived The Sundering inside Eldre'Thalas, kept alive for millennia by the power they drew from the bound demon Immol'thar. When that power began to fail, Prince Tortheldrin decided that fewer elves would mean more energy for those left. According to the game's Adventure Guide, his most loyal lieutenants carried out the killing, and Kalendris was the most willing of them. He cut down many unsuspecting Shen'dralar before one of the doomed elves gave him a mortal wound in a destructive fight. Death didn't end his service.

Not every servant obeyed: the huntress Illyanna Ravenoak refused the same order and was killed for it. The ghosts of the murdered Highborne still drift through the west wing, some of them invisible until a group walks into them, and Kalendris walks among the people he helped kill.

Abilities

  • Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Flay and Mind Blast: shadow damage on single players. Mind Flay also slows its target.
  • Dominate Mind: Kalendris takes control of a player for 10 seconds and turns them on the group.
  • Shadowform: at half health he takes a form of shadow, taking less damage from melee and dealing more shadow damage.

Strategy

Kalendris is a caster, so groups bring him to the tank quickly and interrupt what they can. Dominate Mind is the dangerous part: a mind-controlled healer or damage dealer has to be crowd-controlled or waited out without being killed, and priests can dispel the effect. Once he enters Shadowform, the melee players' damage drops, so casters carry the second half of the fight, and shadow protection from a priest or shadow resistance gear soaks much of what he deals.

The Pattern: Big Bag of Enchantment teaches tailors to make a large bag for enchanting materials. Kalendris also has a small chance to drop each of the class books, such as [Harnessing Shadows] for warlocks, that the Shen'dralar lorekeepers in the Athenaeum trade for class rings.

Later history

When Cataclysm reworked Dire Maul in patch 4.0.3a, Kalendris dropped from level 60 to 44. A new quest added then, The Cursed Remains, has an elf named Estulan ask players to kill him.
