Mankrik

This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.

Mankrik is an orc warrior who stands at the Crossroads in The Barrens, grieving for a wife lost to quilboar raiders. His quest to find her body, Lost in Battle, gives almost no directions, and the corpse is not even named as his wife. Thousands of Horde players asked "Where is Mankrik's wife?" in the zone's general chat, and the question became one of the most lasting jokes in World of Warcraft.

Biography

Mankrik and his wife Olgra were fighting Bristleback quilboar at a small tauren camp in the Barrens when the raiders split them up. Olgra held off three of the boars on her own, but more arrived. Mankrik drew some of the attackers away, saw her overwhelmed, turned back in a rage and was beaten down himself. A tauren druid found him lying by the Gold Road and nursed him back to health.

When players meet him, he spends each day at the Crossroads watching the horizon and killing any quilboar he can find. He does not know whether his wife is alive. A nearby orc, Thork, refuses to help him, saying grief has clouded his judgment.

In World of Warcraft

Mankrik is a level 15 orc who stands in the Crossroads, the main Horde quest hub at the center of the Barrens. He gives two level 20 quests.

Lost in Battle

Lost in Battle (available from level 14) asks the player to find Mankrik's wife and report back. Mankrik's only clues are that they fought at "a small tauren camp" and that he was found on the Gold Road. The objective in the quest log reads "Find Mankrik's Wife", but the body in the world is called Beaten Corpse, so players searching for a named NPC never found one.

The corpse lies in front of a pair of small huts west of the road south of the Crossroads, near where the trail from Lushwater Oasis (the area around Wailing Caverns) meets the main road. Clicking it reveals a female orc warrior killed by blades and spells, her armor nearly destroyed. Returning to Mankrik ends the quest with a short, quiet thank-you, 1,150 experience and reputation with Orgrimmar.

Consumed by Hatred

Consumed by Hatred is the revenge quest. Mankrik asks for 60 [Bristleback Quilboar Tusk] items taken from the Bristleback quilboar, and pays out a choice of [Boar Hunter's Cape] or [Grassland Sash]. Collecting sixty tusks made it one of the longer grinds in the Barrens.

The Barrens chat meme

In the original game, almost every orc, troll and tauren character passed through the Barrens between levels 10 and 25, and many Forsaken came too. The zone was huge, its general chat channel was shared by everyone in it, and most of the people in it were new to the game. That combination produced "Barrens chat", a running stream of jokes, arguments and trivia that became famous in its own right.

"Where is Mankrik's wife?" was its signature question. Because the quest text gave no direction and the target was not named, almost everyone who took the quest ended up asking. Answers ranged from accurate to deliberately useless: inside Blackrock Mountain, next to Illidan's throne, or simply "Mankrik's wife" as a reply to any unrelated question about where something was. Wowhead answered the question on its map for the Beaten Corpse by spelling out the word "THERE" in location markers with a giant arrow pointing at her.

Later history

In Cataclysm (patch 4.0.3a), the Barrens was split in two and both of Mankrik's original quests were removed. The new Northern Barrens version of Mankrik has recovered and buried his wife beside a humble monument at Grol'dom Farm, and his wife was finally given a name, Olgra. Mankrik continued his feud with the quilboar in the Southern Barrens, where a new quest chain hints at a romance with Mahka. He also appears as a random ally in the Molten Front dailies on Mount Hyjal.

Olgra herself turned up later in the Shadowlands as Decimator Olgra, a gladiator in Maldraxxus. Hearthstone made the joke part of a card: playing Mankrik shuffles "Olgra, Mankrik's Wife" into your deck, and his card's flavor text says he relives his nightmare every time a new Horde player is created.

In WoW Classic and later Classic-style servers, the original quest and the corpse returned exactly as they were in patch 1.12, and so did the question.
