Miner Johnson

Miner Johnson is a rare elite in The Deadmines, a human miner working for the Defias Brotherhood who appears on only some visits. Groups that find him get a chance at one of the better shields available below level 20.

Background

The Defias Brotherhood began as Stormwind's stonemasons. After rebuilding Stormwind City they were refused their pay, and under Edwin VanCleef they turned to banditry. In the old mines below Moonbrook in Westfall, VanCleef put a large workforce to digging and building his juggernaut, a warship meant to strike back at the city.

Most of the digging is done by Defias miners, and Miner Johnson is one of them. The game gives him no story of his own. He is a named miner standing with his fellow workers, tougher than the rest of them but otherwise one of the crew.

Abilities

  • Pierce Armor: lowers his target's armor for a few seconds, so the tank takes more damage from everything hitting them.

Strategy

Miner Johnson spawns in a small alcove to the left of the main tunnel, past Rhahk'Zor and before Sneed's Shredder, among a group of Defias Strip Miners. He doesn't appear every time, so many groups never see him.

  • Pull the miners around him first, or pull the whole group and focus on Johnson once the tank has everything.
  • He has the least health of the Deadmines' named enemies and goes down quickly.
  • Pierce Armor hurts most in a big pull. If the tank is holding several miners at once, kill Johnson first so the armor loss ends.

The miners in his alcove are worth killing too. The Defias Strip Miners there can drop [Blackened Defias Boots], and the Defias Overseers and Taskmasters elsewhere in the tunnels drop [Blackened Defias Leggings] and [Blackened Defias Gloves], each at under 2 percent. Together with Captain Greenskin's belt and VanCleef's chest piece, they make up the Blackened Defias leather set.

Loot

Johnson drops one of two items.

Item Chance
[Miner's Cape] (cloak) 65%
[Gold-plated Buckler] (shield) 35%

The Gold-plated Buckler is a rare-quality shield with Stamina and Agility, usable from level 15. It is one of the best shields available at that level, and the main reason players hope he spawns.

Quests

No quest asks for Miner Johnson. Groups usually meet him on the way to the dungeon's quest targets, such as Sneed's Shredder for Underground Assault and VanCleef for The Defias Brotherhood.

Later history

Cataclysm (patch 4.0.3a) rebuilt the Deadmines around new bosses. The 1.12 version returned with World of Warcraft Classic in 2019.
