Overlord Wyrmthalak
This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.
Overlord Wyrmthalak is the black dragonspawn who commands the forces of Lower Blackrock Spire and its final boss. From the Chamber of Battle he rules the orcs, trolls and ogres of the Lower Spire on behalf of General Drakkisath, and through him Nefarian. He holds the third gemstone for the Seal of Ascension and carries a letter that sends Alliance players on toward Drakkisath.
Background
Wyrmthalak is the overlord and taskmaster of the lower city, and he takes his orders from General Drakkisath in the throne room above. The later Adventure Guide says he oversees the Lower Spire's preparations for the war against the Dark Iron dwarves in the depths below. He has no love for Rend Blackhand's "false Horde" and its members, and would sacrifice any number of them to protect his true master, Nefarian.
His domain, the Chamber of Battle, is the innermost room of the Lower Spire. Envoys of the Smolderthorn trolls, Spirestone ogres and Blackrock orcs stand there, all taking his commands. Getting to it means passing through almost every other part of the dungeon, up two levels from Urok Doomhowl's ledge, across a broad hall with a crack in its floor and over one of the spire's bridges.

Abilities
- Cleave: hits his target and up to two others in front of him.
- Demoralizing Shout: lowers the attack power of nearby players.
- Sweeping Slam: a cone in front of him that damages and knocks players back.
- The Overlord's Defense: at half health he calls two guards up the ramp to help him, chosen from a Spirestone Warlord, a Smolderthorn Berserker and a Bloodaxe Veteran.
Strategy
Wyrmthalak is a simple fight with one twist. The tank holds him with his back to the wall behind him, so the knockback from Sweeping Slam can't throw anyone off a ledge or into the room. Melee stand behind him, out of the reach of his cleave and slam.
At 50% health his two guards run up the ramp. They must be crowd-controlled or picked up by a second tank before they reach the casters. Groups that can bring him down fast sometimes ignore them: if he dies before they arrive and the group retreats to the wall behind his starting spot, the guards stand idle and never attack.

Quests
- Seal of Ascension: Vaelan needs Wyrmthalak's [Gemstone of Bloodaxe] along with the gemstones of Highlord Omokk and War Master Voone to make the [Seal of Ascension].
- Warlord's Command (Horde) and Maxwell's Mission (Alliance): both ask for his death along with Omokk's and Voone's.
- General Drakkisath's Command (Alliance): he always carries [General Drakkisath's Command], a letter that players take to Marshal Maxwell at Morgan's Vigil. That leads to General Drakkisath's Demise, the order to kill Drakkisath himself.
- Oculus Illusions: Myranda the Hag needs twenty [Black Dragonspawn Eye] for the Horde's Onyxia chain, and Wyrmthalak usually carries one.
