Pyromancer Loregrain

Pyromancer Loregrain is a tauren shaman of the Twilight's Hammer cult who kneels at the Shrine of Thaurissan in Blackrock Depths. He waits just past the arena, in front of the monument to the Dark Iron architect Franclorn Forgewright, the same statue players visit for the quest that earns the dungeon's master key. In Classic he was a rare elite, and he drops fire-themed caster gear and an enchanting formula.

Background

The game's later Adventure Guide says Loregrain was once a respected member of the Earthen Ring, the shamans who keep the elements in balance, and that he joined the Twilight's Hammer for reasons his old allies never learned. The cult worships the Old Gods and serves their elemental lieutenants, which puts it on good terms with the Dark Irons and their master, Ragnaros.

At some point he made his way to Blackrock Depths and became fixed on Franclorn Forgewright, the great Dark Iron architect whose ghost haunts the shrine. What he wants from the dead architect is never explained. He kneels before Franclorn's statue with two Twilight Emissaries, his fellow cultists, standing guard.

The shrine itself is a monument to the Thaurissan line. Franclorn's ghost asks players to recover his hammer, Ironfel, from his successor Fineous Darkvire and return it to the statue, so most groups end up fighting Loregrain on the way to that quest.

Abilities

  • Scorching Totem: drops a totem at his feet for 35 seconds that throws Scorch at players.
  • Flame Shock: instant fire damage, then more every 3 seconds for 12 seconds.
  • Molten Blast: a fire bolt of 121 to 139 damage. He casts it often, and it can be interrupted.
  • Fire Ward: a shield that absorbs 120 fire damage.

Strategy

Loregrain is one of the easier bosses in the dungeon. The two Twilight Emissaries are the bigger nuisance, so groups often sheep him or have a priest mind control him while they kill the adds, then turn on him. Once he is alone, a rogue or warrior kicking Molten Blast takes away most of his damage. The Scorching Totem should be knocked down as soon as it appears.

Fire resistance helps against all of his spells. Many classes could solo him at level 60, though reaching him on foot means passing the arena and the patrols beyond it; non-stealth classes often used an invisibility potion.

Loot

From our database (patch 1.12):

Item Chance
[Flamestrider Robes] 25%
[Pyric Caduceus] 25%
[Searingscale Leggings] 25%
[Kindling Stave] 25%
[Formula: Enchant Weapon - Fiery Weapon] 16%

The [Formula: Enchant Weapon - Fiery Weapon] was the main reason to hunt him. It teaches enchanters a weapon enchant that now and then blasts the target with fire. Three of his four gear drops carry fire resistance, fitting a pyromancer.

Quests

Loregrain is not the target of any quest, but he sits beside the finish of one. Dark Iron Legacy, from Franclorn's ghost, asks players to take Ironfel from Fineous Darkvire and lay it on the statue. Doing so earns the [Shadowforge Key], which opens the locked doors throughout Shadowforge City. Since Loregrain kneels in front of that statue, groups returning with the hammer have to deal with him first.

Trivia

  • In the Shadowlands raid Sepulcher of the First Ones, the dreadlords Mal'Ganis and Kin'tessa take Loregrain's form.
