Razorclaw the Butcher

Razorclaw the Butcher is a worgen boss of Shadowfang Keep who has taken over the castle's old kitchen. He earned his name slaughtering the keep's human servants when Archmage Arugal brought the worgen in, and he still works the chopping block. He is a straightforward melee fight, best known for a one-handed axe that many players carried for the next several levels.

Background

Before the fall of Shadowfang, the kitchen fed Baron Silverlaine's household. When the worgen overran the keep, Razorclaw cut down the people who had worked there, and he has stayed among the barrels and butcher's tables ever since. He is one of Arugal's Shadowfang pack, the worgen the archmage treats as his children.

The kitchen sits off the courtyard, so Razorclaw is usually the second boss a group meets, right after the door opened by the freed prisoner.

Abilities

Razorclaw has no special spells in the Classic version of the fight. He hits hard in melee for a level 22 elite and has more health than Rethilgore before him. His danger comes from what is around him rather than from anything he casts.

Strategy

  • Clear the kitchen and the hall outside it first. A patrol walks past the kitchen door, and pulling Razorclaw while it is passing turns an easy fight into a hard one.
  • After that, the tank holds him and everyone else attacks. No interrupts or dispels are needed.
  • Watch the trash on the way in. Many of the keep's worgen cast curses and silences, and a group that rushes the pulls around the kitchen can lose its healer before Razorclaw is even engaged.

Loot

Each of Razorclaw's four green and blue drops has about a one in three chance in our data, so a kill usually yields one of them.

Item Chance
[Butcher's Cleaver] 33%
[Bloody Apron] 33%
[Butcher's Slicer] 33%
[Oak Mallet] 33%

[Butcher's Cleaver] is a rare one-handed axe with Strength and Agility, a good find for warriors, rogues, shamans and hunters in their early twenties. [Bloody Apron] is a cloth robe with Stamina that suits a tank's or caster's leveling set as a filler piece. The [Butcher's Slicer] is a one-handed sword and the [Oak Mallet] a two-handed mace with a random enchantment.

Quests

No quest asks for Razorclaw's death. The Horde quests of the keep, such as Arugal Must Die and The Book of Ur, send groups past his kitchen on the way to the upper floors.

Later history

Patch 2.3.0 lowered him from level 22 to 20. In the Cataclysm rebuild of the dungeon (patch 4.0.3a) he lost his own fight and became one of the ghost worgen that Baron Silverlaine summons, now leaping at distant players with Spectral Rush. The Classic fight returned with World of Warcraft Classic.
