Razorgore the Untamed

Razorgore the Untamed is the first boss of Blackwing Lair, a dragon of the black flight who guards Nefarian's eggs in the lair's first hall. The encounter turns the usual raid fight around: a player takes control of Razorgore with a magical orb and uses him to smash all 30 eggs in the room, while the rest of the raid survives waves of orcs and dragonkin. Only after the last egg breaks can the raid fight Razorgore himself.

Background

Nefarian, the eldest son of Deathwing, is trying to breed a new chromatic dragonflight in the top of Blackrock Spire, and the eggs of his black brood are kept in the first great room of his lair, the Dragonmaw Garrison, sometimes called the Egg Chamber. Razorgore guards them, with orcs of the Blackwing Legion and a squad of dragonspawn under his command.

He isn't a willing guardian. The orcish Grethok the Controller and two Blackwing Guardsmen stand on a platform with the Orb of Domination, which keeps Razorgore under the Legion's control. When adventurers kill the Controller, the orb is theirs to use.

Abilities

While a player controls him through the orb, Razorgore has four abilities on that player's action bar:

  • Destroy Egg: destroys a nearby egg. It has a cast time and a short cooldown, and the controller has to face the egg.
  • Calm Dragonkin: puts one of the dragonkin adds to sleep for 30 seconds.
  • Cleave: a melee attack that hits up to ten enemies.
  • Fireball Volley: fire damage to every enemy within about 40 yards, useful for pulling adds off the raid.

Once the eggs are gone and he's free, he fights the raid with Conflagration, which burns a player and sends them into a panic while the flames scorch anyone near them, and War Stomp, a knockback and stun around him. When the eggs are all destroyed he casts Warming Flames on himself, healing to full health.

Strategy

The fight has three phases.

Phase one. The raid kills Grethok and his two guards as fast as possible; Grethok can mind-control players, so he dies first. One player clicks the orb (once: clicking twice gave a debuff that blocked control) and takes control of Razorgore. Pet classes have to dismiss their pets first. Many guilds gave the job to a tank, because Razorgore remembers who controlled him.

Phase two. After a short delay, adds pour in from the four corners of the room, up to 40 Blackwing Legionnaires and Blackwing Mages and 12 Death Talon Dragonspawn. Killed adds are replaced until the eggs are gone. Mages are killed on sight by small teams watching each corner, since they throw fire at the orb controller. Warriors and hunters kite the Legionnaires and dragonspawn around the room, often in a figure eight across the platforms, because the dragonspawn are too dangerous to fight. Healers spread their healing over many targets, since a single healer drawing too much attention could bring the whole room down on the raid.

Meanwhile the controller smashes eggs. Control lasts 90 seconds before it has to be renewed at the orb. If Razorgore dies before every egg is broken, he lets out a blast that kills everyone in the room, and the attempt is over.

Phase three. When the last egg breaks, every add flees and Razorgore heals himself to full. He's immune to taunt but stays focused on his last controller, so that player tanks him. A second tank stands apart from the first to take over when Conflagration disorients the main tank. Ranged attackers do most of the damage from a distance.

Trivia

  • Patch 1.6.1 made the add spawns more consistent and less random. A hotfix two days after the lair opened fixed bugs that let raids beat the first two encounters "with very little effort", as Blizzard put it.
  • Patch 1.8 let Razorgore summon players to him if he couldn't reach them.
  • Razorgore was voiced by Marc Graue.
