Sulfuron Harbinger

This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.

Sulfuron Harbinger is the herald of Ragnaros and the highest-ranking flamewaker in Molten Core after Majordomo Executus. He fights with four Flamewaker Priests who heal each other and him for huge amounts, so the encounter is less about Sulfuron himself and more about keeping his priests from casting. He guards the Rune of Koro and drops Tier 1 shoulders.

Background

Sulfuron is the Firelord's voice. From the depths of the Core he commands the lesser flamewakers who serve Ragnaros in the world outside, such as Ambassador Flamelash in Blackrock Depths. He answers only to Majordomo Executus. Warcraft Wiki's account says he watches Shazzrah closely, believing that the arcane flamewaker means to betray Ragnaros, and that he waits for the day the Firelord claims Azeroth for himself.

He stands at the far end of the Core near the Rune of Koro, with four Flamewaker Priests around him. Warcraft Wiki notes that his name refers to sulfur, the element found around volcanoes.

Abilities

Sulfuron is a melee fighter who supports his priests:

  • Hand of Ragnaros: fire damage to everyone near him, knocking them back and stunning them for two seconds.
  • Inspire: raises one ally's physical damage by 25% and doubles its attack speed for ten seconds.
  • Flame Spear: a thrown spear of fire that also scorches players near the target.
  • Demoralizing Shout: lowers the attack power of nearby players.

His four Flamewaker Priests are the real threat:

  • Dark Mending: heals an ally for around 30,000 health, about 7% of Sulfuron's health in one cast.
  • Shadow Word: Pain and Immolate: damage over time on tanks and healers.

Strategy

Interrupting the priests is the whole fight. Warriors and rogues stay on them with Shield Bash, Pummel and Kick, and Mortal Strike's healing reduction helps when a heal gets through. A raid needs five tanks, one for Sulfuron and one for each priest, though some guilds managed with fewer.

Three approaches were common:

  1. Spread the four priests into separate corners and kill them one at a time, then Sulfuron. This needs five strong tanks and healers to keep them alive.
  2. Tank all of the priests in one spot and lead them out one at a time to be killed, so tanks can share healers.
  3. Gather the priests together and hit them with area damage from mages and warlocks, switching to any priest that falls below 20% so that it dies before the others can heal it.

The priests' Shadow Word: Pain and Immolate do more damage than their melee, so priests and paladins dispel them from the tanks and healers as a priority. Shadow protection on the tanks helps, and fire resistance totems and auras blunt the Hand of Ragnaros. Once the priests are dead, Sulfuron falls quickly.

Quests

Sulfuron always drops the [Hand of Sulfuron] for Hands of the Enemy, the last quest in Duke Hydraxis's chain. Duke Hydraxis wants it along with the hands of Lucifron, Gehennas and Shazzrah, the four flamewaker overseers who keep Ragnaros's forces in order.
