The Unforgiven is a wraith who rises in Market Row on the living side of Stratholme. In life she was Lylia, a champion of her people who took part in the purge of the city and could not live with what she had done. She appears suddenly when a group walks past an archway, surrounded by vengeful phantoms.
Background
When Arthas commanded his forces to purge Stratholme during the Third War, Lylia was among the soldiers who carried out the order. Seeing so many innocents die by her own hand broke her mind, and she fell on her own sword to escape the madness. She now exists as a wraith, denied any forgiveness for what she did. That is the story the later Adventure Guide tells; in Classic she was simply "the Unforgiven," a former champion who had done terrible things in the city.
Warcraft Wiki notes that her name may be a reference to the Metallica song "The Unforgiven," and that her story resembles those of the death lords of Warcraft III.
Abilities
- Frost Nova: Warcraft Wiki's Classic strategy notes say she casts it now and then, freezing players around her in place.
- Vengeful Phantoms: four non-elite phantoms rise with her and attack the group, shocking players with frost.
Later versions also give her Unrelenting Anguish, a channeled shadow attack.
Strategy
The Unforgiven's spawn is scripted. She appears when the group walks past an archway after the right turn beyond the rat trap gate, near where Hearthsinger Forresten can spawn. Groups should rest to full before stepping through, because the fight starts immediately.
She is one of the easier fights in Stratholme, with only about 11,000 health in our data. The phantoms are the main nuisance: a mage or other area damage clears them quickly while the tank holds her. Once the phantoms are gone, she goes down fast.

[Mask of the Unforgiven] is a leather helm and [Soul Breaker] a main-hand axe. [Wildheart Gloves] are the druid's Dungeon Set 1 gloves (see Tier Sets). She also drops a [Corruptor's Scourgestone] and usually a [Plagued Flesh Sample].
Quests
No Classic quest asks for The Unforgiven herself, but her flesh sample counts toward The Flesh Does Not Lie for Betina Bigglezink at Light's Hope Chapel, and her Scourgestone counts toward the Argent Dawn's turn-ins.
Later history
Patch 4.0.3a lowered her to level 47. She stayed in Market Row through the later versions of the dungeon.
