Verdan the Everliving

Verdan the Everliving is a giant plant elemental, once the guardian of the Wailing Caverns, now corrupted into a monster that crushes anything that comes near. He is the hardest fight in the dungeon for most groups, with more health than any boss there except Mutanus the Devourer and an attack that pins the whole party in place.

Background

Little is known of Verdan before the Nightmare. Later Blizzard material describes him as a huge elemental formed long ago from the lush growth of the caverns, a gentle guardian of the caves and the springs that feed The Barrens.

That changed when the druid Naralex fell into the Emerald Nightmare while dreaming in the caverns. The corruption that seeped through him reached every living thing in the caves, from the animals to Naralex's own followers, and Verdan could not escape it either. The guardian became an abomination allied with the mad Druids of the Fang, and he now attacks anyone who enters his part of the caves.

Abilities

  • Grasping Vines: vines burst from the ground around him, damaging everyone nearby, knocking them down and holding them in place for several seconds. Players caught by it can't run, so melee players and anyone standing close take the full force of his next blows.

He also hits very hard in melee for a level 21 creature, and his large health pool makes the fight long.

Strategy

Verdan is optional, with no quest tied to him, but his drops make him worth the fight. He has a lair of his own deep in the caves.

  • Most groups simply let the warrior tank him while the healer keeps the tank alive. That works if the healer has the mana for a long fight; bring a full mana bar and drink first.
  • Ranged damage dealers should stand well back so Grasping Vines doesn't catch them.
  • An alternative is to kite him. Shamans are well suited to it at this level: Frost Shock keeps his attention and slows him, and Earthbind Totem slows him further while the shaman runs and the group attacks.
  • Clear the area first. A long fight with Verdan is a bad time for a wandering deviate to join.

Loot

Verdan drops one of three items, each at about one in three, plus Deviate Hides.

Item Chance
[Living Root] (staff) 33%
[Seedcloud Buckler] (shield) 33%
[Sporid Cape] (cloak) 33%
[Deviate Hide] 80% (quest)

Living Root is a rare two-handed staff with a large bonus to Spirit, popular with priests and druids. Seedcloud Buckler is a rare shield.

Quests

No quest asks for Verdan. His Deviate Hides count toward Deviate Hides for Nalpak, who waits outside the instance portal.

Later history

Legion's Wailing Critters, a pet battle dungeon set in the caverns, shows Verdan's body, treating him as dead in the story. The 1.12 encounter returned with World of Warcraft Classic in 2019.
