Wailing Caverns

The Wailing Caverns are a sprawling cave system under The Barrens where the night elf druid Naralex lies trapped in a corrupted dream. It is one of the first dungeons Horde players reach, built for characters around level 17 to 24, and is known for its winding, confusing layout, its four snake-themed druid bosses and an escort event that ends with the waking of Naralex.
Background
The caves take their name from the mournful sound of wind and steam forcing their way through cracks in the rock. Their underground rivers feed the small oases scattered across the Barrens.
The druid Naralex discovered the caverns and believed he could use their waters, together with the power of the Emerald Dream, to make the dry Barrens green again. He and his disciples went into the caves, and Naralex fell into a deep sleep to reach into the Dream. Instead he was caught by the Emerald Nightmare, a corruption spreading through the Dream. Its energy flowed through him into the caverns. The water turned foul, the animals became twisted "deviate" creatures, and most of his followers went mad and became the Druids of the Fang, who call themselves the Fanglords.

A few disciples kept their minds. They wait at the cave mouth and inside the dungeon, asking adventurers for help.
Bosses
The four Fanglords each drop a gem needed for a quest, and several of their items belong to the Embrace of the Viper set, a leather set for druids and other leather wearers made of [Leggings of the Fang], [Armor of the Fang], [Belt of the Fang], [Footpads of the Fang] and [Gloves of the Fang].
Mad Magglish, a goblin hiding in the caves, is not a true boss but is the target of a quest. Outside the instance, in the cave system leading to the portal, roam the rare elites Trigore the Lasher and Boahn.
Quests
Most quests start in Thunder Bluff, at the oasis camp near the entrance, or in the goblin port of Ratchet.
- Leaders of the Fang: the end of a chain that runs through Arch Druid Hamuul Runetotem and Nara Wildmane, both in Thunder Bluff. Bring her the Gems of Cobrahn, Anacondra, Pythas and Serpentis. The reward is a choice of [Crescent Staff] or [Wingblade].
- Deviate Hides: Nalpak, a disciple of Naralex, wants 20 Deviate Hides. Reward: [Slick Deviate Leggings].
- Deviate Eradication: Ebru wants deviate creatures killed. Rewards include [Dagmire Gauntlets] and [Sizzle Stick].
- Serpentbloom: collect Serpentbloom for Apothecary Zamah in Thunder Bluff.
- Trouble at the Docks: retrieve a bottle of 99-Year-Old Port from Mad Magglish.
- Smart Drinks: gather Wailing Essence for Mebok Mizzyrix in Ratchet.
- Waking Naralex: talk to the Disciple of Naralex at the entrance and escort him to Naralex.
- The Glowing Shard: Mutanus drops [Glowing Shard], which starts a short chain that leads to Falla Sagewind in the Barrens.
Strategy notes
The cave is large, dark and branching, with several layers of tunnels and an underground river. Groups often lose time simply finding the way, and falling from a ledge into the water can drop a group into a crowd of crocolisks.
- The Druids of the Fang cast Sleep and heal one another. Kill casters first and interrupt heals.
- Each Fanglord fights similarly. Lady Anacondra and Lord Pythas cast Lightning Bolt and Sleep, Lord Cobrahn turns into a cobra and poisons his target, and Lord Serpentis heals himself.
- Skum is a large thunder lizard in the water channel; Kresh is a giant turtle that wanders the river and can be skipped.
- Verdan the Everliving is an ancient-like plant creature on a ledge, guarded by trash. His Grasping Vines knocks down everyone near him.
The Naralex event is the dungeon's set piece. Once all four Fanglords are dead, the disciple at the entrance will lead the group through the caves to Naralex's resting place and begin a ritual to wake him. Waves of deviate creatures attack the disciple during the ritual. At the end, Mutanus the Devourer, a huge murloc-like nightmare creature, appears. Defeat him and Naralex wakes, thanks the group and flies off with his disciple in the form of storm crows.

Fishing in the caverns yields [Deviate Fish], which goes into the cooking recipe Savory Deviate Delight. The dish can turn the eater into a pirate or a ninja for a short time and became a well-known novelty item.
History
The Wailing Caverns were in the game at launch in November 2004. Cataclysm (patch 4.0.3a) moved the dungeon into the new Northern Barrens zone, simplified some paths and adjusted bosses, though the Naralex story stayed largely intact. The original layout returned with World of Warcraft Classic in 2019.
