Arcanist Doan

Arcanist Doan is the keeper of the Scarlet Crusade's library and the final boss of the Library wing of the Scarlet Monastery. A former member of the Knights of the Silver Hand who helped create the heart of the Ashbringer, he is now the Crusade's most powerful mage. He is a level 37 elite known for one move: at half health he shields himself and unleashes a huge fire blast that can kill a careless group outright. Behind him sits the strongbox holding the key to the rest of the monastery.

Background

Before the Third War, Doan was a mage of the Silver Hand and a friend of Alexandros Mograine. According to the Ashbringer comics, he was at the meeting in Southshore where Mograine showed his companions a dark crystal taken from an orc warlock. Doan was skeptical at first, but he proposed the experiment through which the group purified the crystal, which later became the heart of the Ashbringer.

After Mograine's death, Doan joined the Scarlet Crusade. He believes arcane magic is the only way to rid Lordaeron of The Scourge, a view the Light-minded Crusade is said to distrust, yet he is a trusted officer. He guards the monastery's library and keeps [The Scarlet Key], which opens the Armory and Cathedral and gives access to Crusade operations across the Plaguelands.

Abilities

• Arcane Bubble: makes Doan immune to all attacks and spells for eight seconds. He can't attack while it lasts.
• Detonation: after the bubble, Fire erupts from him, hitting everyone within 30 yards for very heavy damage.
• Polymorph: turns a player into a sheep for a few seconds.
• Silence: silences everyone within 10 yards for four seconds.
• Arcane Explosion: Arcane damage to everyone near him.

Strategy

Doan waits in the Athenaeum at the end of the Library, with no guards of his own once the room is clear.

• At 50% health he casts Arcane Bubble and then begins Detonation, which takes five seconds to cast. When the bubble goes up, every player should run out of his line of sight, around the doorway or back into the corridor. Detonation needs line of sight to hit.
• Many groups tank him near the doorway so the escape is short.
• His Silence hits everyone close to him. Healers and casters should stand at range, ideally in the corridor, while the tank keeps him in their view.
• Dispel Polymorph quickly. Priests and paladins can remove it; druids can shift out of it.

Because no stealth-detecting guards stand on the way to him, Doan was a popular solo target for rogues and druids farming his rare drops to disenchant.

Loot

The Illusionary Rod is a two-handed staff with 15 Intellect and 10 Spirit, and the Hypnotic Blade a dagger that adds to spell damage. His robe and mantle are cloth. Doan's Strongbox, in the room behind him, holds [The Scarlet Key].

Quests

• Hearts of Zeal (Horde): Doan drops [Heart of Zeal] for Master Apothecary Faranell in Undercity, like the other Crusaders.

Trivia

• Doan is voiced by Chris Metzen.
• A silver coin fished from the fountain in Dalaran reveals that Doan had a crush on Brigitte Abbendis.
• A younger, living Doan appears in the Old Hillsbrad Foothills of the Caverns of Time, at the Southshore meeting where the Ashbringer was born.

Later history

Mists of Pandaria (patch 5.0.4) rebuilt the monastery and replaced Doan with Flameweaver Koegler. The original encounter returned with World of Warcraft Classic in 2019, and with the Scarlet Monastery of Old in retail patch 10.1.7.
