Avatar of Hakkar
The Avatar of Hakkar is a skeletal winged serpent, a fragment of the blood god Hakkar the Soulflayer, that players can call into the Sunken Temple by completing the Atal'ai's own summoning ritual. The Avatar is optional and appears only if someone in the group brings the Egg of Hakkar from a long quest chain. The event looks complicated, but the fight at the end is one of the gentler ones in the temple.
Background
Hakkar is the Gurubashi trolls' god of blood, a winged serpent who demanded living sacrifices. Long ago the Atal'ai priests tried to bring him into the world, and the Gurubashi Empire tore itself apart to stop them. In the Classic era the surviving Atal'ai are trying again in their sunken temple. According to the Dungeon Journal added in Cataclysm, their new ritual uses the blood of green dragons in place of the living victims of old.
The troll Yeh'kinya, in Tanaris, has his own plan for the ritual: he wants adventurers to let the Avatar rise, defeat it, and capture its essence in the Egg of Hakkar. His chain begins with Screecher Spirits and ends with The God Hakkar.

The ritual
The summoning happens in the Sanctum of the Fallen God, a round room around a ritual circle. A player carrying the [Egg of Hakkar] uses it at the altar to start the event. Hakkar's spirit is held back by Eternal Flames burning around the room, and the group has to put them out:
- Elite Hakkari Bloodkeepers appear, one at a time. Each one drops [Hakkari Blood], which is used to douse a flame.
- Non-elite serpents spawn and wander the middle of the room. Stay along the walls so you fight only the Bloodkeepers.
- Nightmare Suppressors, dragonspawn of the corrupted green flight, walk in and try to stop the summoning. Pull them away from the circle and kill them.
When the last flame goes out, the Avatar rises in the circle shouting "HAKKAR LIVES!" The group can rest between flames, so the event can be taken at an easy pace.

Abilities
- Cause Insanity: turns a player against the group for a few seconds, attacking faster and moving faster.
- Curse of Tongues: slows a player's spellcasting by 50% for 15 seconds.
- Lash: stuns the tank for 2 seconds and may disarm them.
Strategy
The Avatar has modest health for a boss. Kill the serpents under him with area damage once he appears, then focus on him. Keep the healer out of melee so a maddened player can't reach them, and remove Curse of Tongues from healers and casters. After he dies, players on the quest loot his essence for the egg.
Loot
The Avatar always drops the [Essence of Hakkar] for the quest. His six blue items each drop about one time in six in our data, and the epic [Embrace of the Wind Serpent] drops 2% of the time.
| Item | Chance |
|---|---|
| [Embrace of the Wind Serpent] | 2% |
| [Spire of Hakkar] | 17% |
| [Might of Hakkar] | 17% |
| [Warrior's Embrace] | 17% |
| [Windscale Sarong] | 17% |
| [Featherskin Cape] | 17% |
| [Bloodshot Greaves] | 17% |
| [Essence of Hakkar] | 100% |
The staff [Spire of Hakkar] adds spell damage and healing, and the mace [Might of Hakkar] is a one-handed weapon with Stamina.
Quests
- The God Hakkar: from Yeh'kinya in Tanaris. Collect the Avatar's essence in the egg. The reward is a choice of the [Avenguard Helm], the [Lifeforce Dirk] or the [Gemburst Circlet]. The egg stays in the player's bags afterward and can start the ritual again on later runs.

Trivia
- The Avatar is voiced by Marc Graue.
- Hakkar himself finally takes physical form in Zul'Gurub, the 20-player raid added in patch 1.7.
