Badlands

The Badlands are a hot, dry desert of red mesas and canyons south of Loch Modan, for characters of roughly levels 35 to 45. Dwarven archaeologists of the Explorers' League dig here for relics of the Titans, while troggs, ogres, Dark Iron dwarves and black dragonkin make the work dangerous. The zone is the gateway to the dungeon of Uldaman and holds the Horde outpost of Kargath.

Geography

The Badlands are a broad, sunbaked plateau with almost no water. Dust storms, buzzards and coyotes give it the feel of a desert.

  • Kargath, in the northwest corner, is a Horde outpost cut into the cliffs. It has a flight point, an inn and quest givers from the orcish Kargath Expeditionary Force.
  • Hammertoe's Digsite and the Uldaman excavation in the north are where the Explorers' League dug into the ancient Titan vault of Uldaman.
  • Angor Fortress, in the north-central hills, is an old dwarven fort taken over by Dark Iron dwarves of the Shadowforge clan.
  • Lethlor Ravine, the large canyon in the east, is home to black dragonkin and whelps.
  • Camp Kosh, Camp Boff, Camp Cagg and Dustbelch Grotto are hostile camps scattered across the zone, several of them held by ogres.
  • Agmond's End, in the southwest, is a dig site where an Explorers' League prospector disappeared.
  • The Dustbowl, Mirage Flats and Apocryphan's Rest fill the open middle of the zone.

History

The Titans built the vault of Uldaman deep under the hills, and dwarven explorers searching for their own origins found it in recent years.

In Classic, the dwarves of Ironforge's Explorers' League have pulled back from the excavation after the troggs of the Stonevault clan poured out of Uldaman and overran it. Meanwhile, the Dark Iron dwarves of the Shadowforge clan have taken Angor Fortress and are digging for the same relics on behalf of Ragnaros. The Horde holds Kargath as a base for watching the Blackrock and Dark Iron forces to the south and west.

Quests and notable NPCs

The dig and Uldaman. Prospector Ryedol of the Explorers' League camps south of Hammertoe's Digsite. His friend Hammertoe Grez has been captured by the troggs. Players find a note that sets off A Sign of Hope, then Prospect of Faith, a chain that leads into Uldaman and to Advisor Belgrum in Ironforge. The dwarves also send players into Angor Fortress after Ambassador Infernus, whom Ragnaros himself sent to oversee the Shadowforge dig (An Ambassador of Evil).

The inventors. Lotwil Veriatus, an inventor working on shackles to bind elementals, sends players after the zone's rock elementals in Study of the Elements: Rock and its sequels, and wants Frost Oil and a Gyrochronatom in Coolant Heads Prevail and Gyro... What?. His partner Lucien Tosselwrench has his own small chain. The goblin Rigglefuzz trades flash bombs and other goods for Pearl Diving and Barbecued Buzzard Wings.

Lethlor Ravine. Garek, sent by Krasus of the Kirin Tor, investigates the dragons in the ravine in Tremors of the Earth. Nearby, Sigrun Ironhew runs a camp of dwarves who fled the excavation (Mirages, Scrounging), and Theldurin the Lost warns about a scroll that could free an ancient being (The Lost Fragments).

Kargath (Horde). Neeka Bloodscar, the outpost's head scout, wants coyote jawbones in Coyote Thieves. Gorn sends players after the ogre leader Boss Tho'grun in Broken Alliances, and Jarkal Mossmeld collects reagents in Badlands Reagent Run.

Rares. The Badlands have several well-known rare creatures. Broken Tooth, a mountain lion with a very fast attack speed, became one of the most sought-after hunter pets in Classic. Zaricotl is a rare buzzard.

Dungeons

Uldaman (Uldaman) is a dungeon for roughly levels 35 to 47. Its main entrance is at the excavation in the northern Badlands. Inside, Stonevault troggs and Shadowforge dwarves fight over the vault, and the final boss, Archaedas, is an ancient stone watcher of the Titans who guards the vault's deepest chamber and the Discs of Norgannon.

Getting there

Alliance players ride south from Thelsamar in Loch Modan, through a pass in the mountains. There is no Alliance flight point in the Badlands in Classic, so the gryphon at Thelsamar is the usual starting point. Horde players fly to Kargath, or walk in from the Searing Gorge along the trail south of Kargath. Kargath's flight path also makes it the Horde's usual route to the Burning Steppes and Blackrock Mountain.
