Uldaman

Uldaman is an ancient vault of the Titans buried under the Badlands, dug open by dwarf archaeologists and now overrun by troggs and Dark Iron dwarves. The dungeon is built for characters around level 41 to 51. It is long and full of quests, and at its bottom lie the Discs of Norgannon, which tell players where the dwarves came from.

Background

In the ancient past, titan-forged servants built Uldaman as a vault. One of its purposes was to hold the troggs, failed creations that the titan keepers set aside in stasis. The vault also became a resting place for some of the earthen, beings of living stone that guarded it. Over time the earthen were struck by what the lore calls the curse of flesh, a change that slowly turned them into creatures of flesh and blood. The ones who woke and left Uldaman became the first dwarves.

Before the Third War, dwarves of the Explorers' League from Ironforge began excavating the site. Their digging woke the troggs, who killed most of the expedition and then tunneled toward Dun Morogh, where they later invaded Gnomeregan. In the time of World of Warcraft, the Stonevault troggs hold the upper halls, and the Dark Iron Dwarves of the Shadowforge clan have come to dig for the vault's secrets. Deep inside, the stone watcher Archaedas and the titan construct Ironaya still guard the oldest chambers.

Baelog, Eric "The Swift" and Olaf are the Lost Dwarves, fought together as a trio. They are a nod to Blizzard's 1993 game The Lost Vikings, as are the names of the items used to reach Ironaya: [The Shaft of Tsol] and the [Gni'kiv Medallion] combine into the [Staff of Prehistoria], and "Tsol" and "Gni'kiv" spell "Lost" and "Viking" backward.

Quests

Uldaman has more quests than almost any other dungeon of its level.

Strategy notes

The dungeon is large and splits into an upper section full of troggs and Dark Iron dwarves and a lower section of titan halls. It has two entrances, and the second lets groups reach the later bosses without crossing the whole upper section.

  • Revelosh, a trogg caster, drops the Shaft of Tsol. The Gni'kiv Medallion is in Baelog's Chest after the Lost Dwarves fight. Combine them and place the staff in the Map Chamber to open Ironaya's room.
  • Ironaya is a large iron golem. She uses Knock Away, which throws her target across the room, and War Stomp.
  • Obsidian Sentinel splits off smaller copies of itself as it takes damage.
  • Galgann Firehammer is a Dark Iron leader who casts fire spells such as Fire Nova. Grimlok is the chieftain of the Stonevault troggs.
  • To fight Archaedas, one player uses the altar in his chamber to wake him. He wakes Earthen Guardians and Vault Warders from their alcoves during the fight. Kill or control the adds as they come and keep damage on Archaedas.

History

Uldaman was part of World of Warcraft at launch in November 2004. It was the first place in the game to show the link between the titans and the dwarves, a thread later expanded in Ulduar in Wrath of the Lich King.

Later history

Patch 4.1.0 removed the need for the Staff of Prehistoria, letting players use the keystone in the Map Chamber directly. Dragonflight added a new dungeon, Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr, set in deeper parts of the same vault. The 1.12 version returned with World of Warcraft Classic in 2019.
