This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.

Bill Petras (William Petras) was an American artist who served as art director of World of Warcraft during its original development, and later as art director of Overwatch. His concept paintings of zones such as Stranglethorn Vale, Tirisfal Glades and Ironforge helped define what Azeroth looked like in 2004. He died in April 2025.

Career at Blizzard

Petras joined Blizzard in 1997, the same week as developer Harley D. Huggins II, who became a close friend. His first credits there were on StarCraft and its expansion Brood War, both released in 1998. He then became art director of World of Warcraft and is credited in that role on the 2004 release. Over his career he worked in games for about 24 years, nearly two decades of them at Blizzard.

Work on World of Warcraft

As art director, Petras led the visual design of the world. Warcraft Wiki's gallery of his work includes concept art for many of the original zones:

These places span the range of moods in the original game. Elwynn Forest and Teldrassil are bright, peaceful starting zones for humans and night elves. Tirisfal Glades, where undead players begin, is a gloomy, dying forest, and the Plaguelands farther east show the land poisoned by The Scourge. The Blasted Lands is a red, cracked wasteland around the Dark Portal, and Ironforge is a great hall carved into a mountain in Dun Morogh.

He also painted the mural of gryphons flying over Azeroth that Blizzard showed at E3 2003, and the cover art for Richard A. Knaak's War of the Ancients novel trilogy (The Well of Eternity, The Demon Soul and The Sundering), which tells the story of the War of the Ancients.

Red 5 and Overwatch

Petras left Blizzard in 2005, after World of Warcraft launched, and worked at Red 5 Studios on the online shooter Firefall. Red 5 was founded by former Blizzard staff, led by the WoW team lead Mark Kern.

He returned to Blizzard in January 2010 and joined Team 4, the group that turned ideas from the cancelled Titan project into Overwatch. He was the game's art director when Blizzard announced it at BlizzCon 2014. He stayed with the game through Overwatch 2, as its art director, and left Blizzard in October 2021.

Death

Petras died unexpectedly in early April 2025. The news was shared on LinkedIn by Harley D. Huggins II, a former Blizzard developer who said the two had joined Blizzard in the same week and been close friends for 28 years. Huggins called him an amazingly gifted artist and remembered their long conversations about game development, comics, toys, monster movies and Conan. Several outlets reported Petras's age as 54. Players posted tributes to him on the official Overwatch forums.
