Broodlord Lashlayer

Broodlord Lashlayer is a black drakonid in Nefarian's service who guards the way into the inner halls of Blackwing Lair. Reaching him is half the battle: the raid first has to cross the suppression room, a gauntlet of traps, whelps and elite dragonkin. The Broodlord himself is a pure threat-management fight, since his knockback cuts each tank's threat in half. He drops Tier 2 boots and the sword [Maladath, Runed Blade of the Black Flight].

Background

Drakonids are the dragon-men Nefarian breeds as soldiers. Lashlayer commands the brood at the end of the Halls of Strife, standing at the gate that leads deeper into the lair, toward the laboratories where the black drakes and Chromaggus wait. He comes after Razorgore the Untamed and Vaelastrasz, and many guilds remember him as the point where Blackwing Lair stopped being a test of gear and became a test of discipline.

The suppression room

Before the Broodlord comes the trash that made him famous. After the Death Talon packs, led by Death Talon Captains and including Death Talon Wyrmguards, stairs lead up into two connected suppression rooms. Their floors are covered with suppression devices that, when active, slow the movement, attacks and spellcasting of anyone near them. Stealthed rogues spend this part of the instance doing nothing but disarming devices, which come back after a while. Packs of non-elite whelps in several colors swarm the room and respawn every 30 seconds, so mages and warlocks burn them down with area spells, while hunters and tanks deal with patrolling elites such as the Death Talon Hatchers.

The usual approach was to move through slowly, clearing each pack in a safe corner, and resting between whelp waves. Many raids lost more time and players here than on the Broodlord himself.

Abilities

  • Mortal Strike: a very heavy hit on the main tank that also cuts the healing it receives. On a tank with low armor or health, it could kill outright.
  • Blast Wave: fire damage around him that knocks players back.
  • Cleave: a frontal attack that cloth wearers have to avoid.
  • Knock Away: throws the player at the top of his threat list back and cuts their threat by half.

Strategy

The fight is about holding him. Each Knock Away halves the current tank's threat, so after a few minutes several tanks have taken turns and the raid's damage dealers may suddenly be ahead of all of them. Raids handled this in different ways: some kept their damage low and steady, some burned him down before threat could become a problem, and some paused their attacks each time he changed targets until a new tank had control.

Players used every threat tool they had. Mages, priests and warlocks took talents that reduced their threat, rogues used Vanish, hunters used Feign Death, and warlocks were sometimes told to use only damage over time spells. Warriors tanking him needed high armor and health, and priests timed Power Word: Shield right after each Mortal Strike. Effects that lowered his attack power, such as Demoralizing Shout, helped.

Patch 1.8 fixed a bug that had made his Mortal Strike weaker than intended, making the fight harder. Since the suppression room's whelps keep respawning, raids fight him at his gate, away from the devices.

The [Heartstriker] is a bow, the [Lifegiving Gem] a warrior trinket, and the [Venomous Totem] a rogue trinket. The boots include the warrior's [Sabatons of Wrath], the paladin's [Judgement Sabatons] and the rogue's [Bloodfang Boots].

Quests

Since patch 1.9, the Broodlord always drops the [[forever:item:20383]]. Baristolth of the Shifting Sands at Cenarion Hold in Silithus asks for it in [[forever:quest:8288]], one of the steps of the long Scepter of the Shifting Sands chain that opened the gates of Ahn'Qiraj. See Opening of the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj.
