Darkmoon Faire

The Darkmoon Faire is a traveling carnival run by the showman Silas Darkmoon. Added in patch 1.6, it spends one week of each month set up near Goldshire in Elwynn Forest or below Thunder Bluff in Mulgore, taking turns between the two, and it welcomes Alliance and Horde alike. Players come for its fortune teller, its strange shops, and above all its prize tickets, which they earn by bringing the carnies goods from all over the world. The Faire is also a reputation faction, reached mostly through those turn-ins and through Darkmoon card decks.

The Faire and its people

Silas Darkmoon describes the Faire as a celebration of the wondrous and mysterious, gathered from the far corners of the world and beyond. Where it goes the rest of the time, its members only say "parts unknown". The Faire's people are a collection of oddities: the ogre Burth, the strongwoman Kerri Hicks, Chronos "who never forgets", the frog seller Flik, and the gnoll Sayge, who tells fortunes.

When the Faire is coming, barkers such as Melnan Darkstone in the Eastern Kingdoms and Kruban Darkblade in Kalimdor announce it in the big cities. The carnies spend three days putting up tents, and then the Faire opens for a week.

What there is to do

  • Sayge's fortunes. Sayge asks two moral questions; the answers decide which of several two-hour buffs he grants, such as +10% damage or a large boost to one stat. Raiders lined up for it before big fights. Some of his written fortunes start the quest Your Fortune Awaits You....
  • Shops. Lhara sells exotic goods, including the [Darkmoon Ring] and [Darkmoon Necklace], and Professor Thaddeus Paleo sells scrolls and potions and handles the Darkmoon cards.
  • Tickets. The heart of the Faire, described below.

Tickets and reputation

The [Darkmoon Faire Prize Ticket] is the Faire's currency. It is soulbound and can only be spent with Gelvas Grimegate, who hands out prizes through quests. Players earn tickets by bringing the carnies things they want, in five tiers by level:

Giver Wants Example quests
Yebb Neblegear Animal parts from around the world Small Furry Paws, Evil Bat Eyes, Glowing Scorpid Blood
Kerri Hicks Blacksmithing goods Coarse Weightstone, Rituals of Strength
Rinling Engineering goods Copper Modulator, Thorium Widget
Chronos Leatherworking goods Carnival Boots, Armor Kits

Each turn-in pays between 1 and 20 tickets depending on its tier, and in patch 1.12 each also gives 100 reputation with the Faire. The lower tiers stop being offered as reputation climbs, and partway through Friendly the top tier is replaced by "More" versions such as More Thorium Widgets, which pay tickets but no reputation. A new visitor can also get five free tickets from The Darkmoon Faire.

Beyond that point, reputation comes from turning in Darkmoon card decks to Professor Paleo. The level 60 cards drop rarely across the world; collecting all eight cards of a suit, from Ace to Eight, makes a deck, and each deck gives 150 reputation and a powerful trinket.

Rewards

Gelvas Grimegate's prizes run from cheap toys to items that took months of turn-ins:

The card decks are the faction's best rewards. The Beasts deck gives [Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon] (Darkmoon Beast Deck), the Portals deck [Darkmoon Card: Twisting Nether] (Darkmoon Portals Deck), the Warlords deck [Darkmoon Card: Heroism] (Darkmoon Warlords Deck) and the Elementals deck [Darkmoon Card: Maelstrom] (Darkmoon Elementals Deck). The Blue Dragon card, which sometimes lets a caster spend no mana for a few seconds, was prized by healers and sold for small fortunes on the auction house.

Reputation itself unlocks little in Classic. Turn-ins stop counting long before Exalted, and only card decks and the fortune quests carry players beyond that.

History and trivia

  • The Faire first appeared in patch 1.6. The Burning Crusade added a third location near Shattrath City in Outland.
  • In patch 4.3 the Faire moved permanently to its own island, Darkmoon Island, reached by portal, and the old tickets were replaced by a new currency.
  • Sayge's two-hour buff, "Sayge's Dark Fortune", became a staple of world-buff preparation when Classic returned in 2019.
