Deviate Faerie Dragon
The Deviate Faerie Dragon is a rare elite in the Wailing Caverns: a small, brightly colored dragon twisted by the nightmare that grips the caves. It does not appear on most visits, and groups that find it get a shot at one of the best wands available at level 20.
Background
Faerie dragons are small, butterfly-winged dragonkin tied to the Emerald Dream, the green dragonflight's realm of primal nature. In Kalimdor they live in places where the Dream's influence is strong, such as the forests of Ashenvale and Feralas.
The Wailing Caverns lie on the other side of that bond. When the druid Naralex fell into the Emerald Nightmare while dreaming in the caves, the corruption leaked into the waking world and changed the creatures living there. The resulting "deviate" beasts include raptors, snakes, lizards and moths. The Deviate Faerie Dragon is the oddest of them, a creature of the Dream turned into one of the Nightmare's servants.

Abilities
The dragon has no special mechanic worth planning around in patch 1.12. It is a rare elite with modest health for its level, and the fight is short.
Strategy
When it appears, the Deviate Faerie Dragon is found along the path toward Lord Serpentis, in the deeper part of the dungeon. Its spawn chance is low; players who have hunted it estimate it at roughly one visit in ten or fewer.
- Keep an eye out for it while clearing the way to Serpentis. Because it is rare, many groups miss it entirely or mistake it for an ordinary deviate.
- Clear the nearby deviates first and pull it on its own. It is an ordinary elite fight from there.
Two other rare elites, Trigore the Lasher and Boahn, roam the caves outside the instance portal.
Loot
The dragon drops one of two items, each at about one in two, plus the Deviate Hides every creature here carries.
| Item | Chance |
|---|---|
| [Firebelcher] (wand) | 50% |
| [Feyscale Cloak] (cloak) | 50% |
| [Deviate Hide] | 80% (quest) |
Firebelcher is the prize: a rare-quality fire wand that mages, priests and warlocks can use from level 15, with damage well above most wands at that level.
Quests
No quest asks for the dragon itself. Its Deviate Hides count toward Deviate Hides for Nalpak, who waits in the caves outside the instance portal.

Later history
The faerie dragon remained in the dungeon in later versions, got a new model in Legion (patch 7.0.3) and became tameable for hunters in Dragonflight (patch 10.0.2). The 1.12 version returned with World of Warcraft Classic in 2019.
