Doctor Theolen Krastinov

Doctor Theolen Krastinov, called the Butcher, is the torturer of Scholomance. He supplies bodies and body parts for the school's experiments and keeps his victims alive with magic so they can suffer longer. He works in the Hall of the Damned, one of the six rooms around the Headmaster's Study, and is one of the six instructors who must die before Darkmaster Gandling appears.

Background

Krastinov was once a respected physician. During the rise of the Scourge he developed a lust for dark knowledge that drove him mad, and he became the servant of Kirtonos the Herald, keeping the gargoyle fed with the blood of his victims.

His first victims came from the household of Caer Darrow. Eva and Lucien Sarkhoff, servants of the Barov family, were trapped in the dungeon and tortured for months while he tested plagues on them. Eva's ghost, Eva Sarkhoff, tells players how he introduced himself and how they came to know him as "the Butcher." The two ghosts cannot rest until he is dead and their remains are burned.

Abilities

Krastinov is not a necromancer in the strict sense; he fights with blades.

• Rend: a bleed on his target.
• Backhand: stuns his target for two seconds.
• Enrage: near the end of the fight his attack speed and damage rise sharply.

Strategy

He is a tank-and-spank fight with a sting at the end. The tank needs enough health to survive his enraged attacks, and the group should save cooldowns and burst damage for the last part of his health. Warcraft Wiki notes that, although he is hostile, he has no aggro radius, so a group can walk right up to him and pull him when it is ready. His room's trash must be dealt with too, because Gandling's Shadow Portal can send a player into it during the final fight.

Loot

Drop chances are from our database (patch 1.12). He shares the instructors' loot table, plus a Dungeon Set 1 piece of his own.

[Magister's Gloves] are the mage's Dungeon Set 1 gloves (see Tier Sets). He also drops a [Corruptor's Scourgestone] for the Argent Dawn.

Quests

• Doctor Theolen Krastinov, the Butcher: Eva Sarkhoff asks you to kill the Butcher and burn the Sarkhoffs' remains. It opens the chain that continues with Jandice Barov in Krastinov's Bag of Horrors and ends with Kirtonos the Herald, the summoning of Kirtonos the Herald.
• From patch 1.2.2, players who have finished that chain can loot more [Blood of Innocents] from him to summon Kirtonos again.

Later history

Krastinov was removed from the dungeon in Mists of Pandaria, but his look lives on: the school's Krastinovian Carvers are students surgically altered to look like him, and he returns as a rare in the level 90 Heroic version. His soul is later said to have gone to Revendreth for atonement. The Legacy of Scholomance brought his Classic fight back in patch 10.1.5.
