Fenrus the Devourer

Fenrus the Devourer is the giant worg that guards the study of Archmage Arugal in Shadowfang Keep. He is Arugal's pet, far larger than any ordinary wolf, and his roar when he spots intruders carries through the whole keep. Killing him brings Arugal himself out for a moment to punish the group with a pack of voidwalkers.

Background

When Arugal settled in the ruined keep with the worgen he called his sons, he kept a guardian at his side: Fenrus, a worg of unnatural size. Warcraft Wiki suggests the beast may have been grown by dark magic, Arugal's or the worgen's. Fenrus prowls the main study in Arugal's chambers, high in the keep, and he is the last major guardian before Wolf Master Nandos and Arugal himself.

He is a beast, not a worgen, and hunters cannot tame him.

Abilities

  • Toxic Saliva: Fenrus's bite poisons a player, dealing Nature damage every 6 seconds and draining mana to feed the worg. It lasts two minutes, so casters should have it cured if they can.
  • He hits hard in melee for a level 25 beast.

Strategy

Fenrus is a tank-and-kill fight. Have someone who can remove poisons (a druid, a shaman, or a paladin with Purify) clean Toxic Saliva off the healer and casters, and keep the tank healed.

The real test comes after he dies. Arugal appears in the room, shouts "Who dares interfere with the Sons of Arugal?", and summons four Arugal's Voidwalkers. They are not elite and do not hit hard, but four at once can overwhelm a healer whose mana is already low. Rest before engaging Fenrus, and be ready to pick up the voidwalkers with area attacks or several tanks.

Quests

No quest in patch 1.12 asks for Fenrus, though Horde groups on Arugal Must Die must go through his room to reach Arugal.

Trivia

  • Warcraft Wiki notes that his name echoes Fenrir, the giant wolf of Norse mythology who is fated to kill Odin at Ragnarök.

Later history

Fenrus was removed when Cataclysm rebuilt Shadowfang Keep in patch 4.0.3a. In Legion lore his soul, like Arugal's, went to the Shadowlands, where death knights of the Ebon Blade hunted it during the class campaign. He returned in his original form with World of Warcraft Classic.
