Ion Hazzikostas is the game director of World of Warcraft at Blizzard Entertainment, a role he has held since late 2016. A former Washington, DC litigation attorney, he joined Blizzard in 2008 after years as a raid leader in the original game, and spent his early career designing raid and dungeon encounters. He is known to players by his forum name, "Watcher."

Early life and law career

Hazzikostas grew up in New York City. In a 2018 PAX West keynote, he said his Greek father told him stories from mythology at bedtime, that his mother's work as a teacher gave the family access to discounted computers and software, and that he grew up playing Mac games, solving puzzles and enjoying math. He studied Latin and acted in theater before going on to study law.

Before joining Blizzard he was an associate in the litigation department of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr (WilmerHale), a Washington, DC law firm. His practice areas included white-collar criminal defense and large internal investigations.

Raiding in the original game

Hazzikostas started playing World of Warcraft in 2004, in the evenings after work at the law firm. He told the PAX West audience that when his guild first entered Molten Core, he noticed that the Core Hounds appeared at set intervals. He began calling out what to do, and without setting out to, became the guild's raid leader as it worked through the raid. A friend who had become a programmer at Blizzard encouraged him to rethink his career. With no professional game design experience, he applied with a resume and cover letter, flew from the East Coast to Irvine, California, for an interview, and was offered a job in August 2008, about three months before Wrath of the Lich King launched.

Work at Blizzard

Blizzard's official biography says he joined the World of Warcraft team in summer 2008 as a game designer. His early work included designing and implementing raid bosses, class design and balance, and looking after the achievement system. He has said he chose the name "Watcher" because he needed a character to watch Ulduar raid testing on the public test realm. He went on to work on every raid and dungeon from Wrath of the Lich King onward. Interviews credit him with work on the Faction Champions encounter in Trial of the Crusader and with writing well-known boss lines, including Thorim's "I remember you... in the mountains" and one of Sindragosa's taunts.

He became lead encounter designer, and by Mists of Pandaria was posting on the official forums as Watcher. In 2015 he moved up to assistant game director under Tom Chilton. When Chilton left the World of Warcraft team for another Blizzard project in October 2016, Hazzikostas was named game director.

As director he has been the public face of the game in interviews, developer streams, Reddit AMAs and BlizzCon presentations. At BlizzCon 2018 he joined engineers Brian Birmingham and Omar Gonzalez on the "Restoring History: Creating WoW Classic" panel, which explained how the team rebuilt the patch 1.12 game for World of Warcraft Classic from archived data, art and code. In August 2018 he gave the "Storytime" keynote at PAX West in Seattle.

Later career

Hazzikostas has directed the modern game through Battle for Azeroth, Shadowlands, Dragonflight, The War Within and Midnight. In 2026 interviews he discussed Midnight and new restrictions on what raid add-ons can do; a PCGamesN profile that year noted he had spent nearly 18 years on the game, ten of them as director. At BlizzCon 2026 he joined executive producer Holly Longdale on stage to present the year's World of Warcraft announcements, which also included World of Warcraft: Forever.
