Tom Chilton
Tom Chilton is an American game designer who joined the World of Warcraft team in early 2004, about ten months before launch, and designed many of its core systems, including talents, classes, the auction house, combat and battlegrounds. He went on to be lead designer of Wrath of the Lich King and game director of World of Warcraft from Cataclysm through Legion. Players knew him on the forums as Kalgan.
Ultima Online
Before Blizzard, Chilton spent about four years at Origin Systems as a game designer and then lead game designer on Ultima Online, one of the first large online role-playing games. MobyGames credits him on three Ultima Online expansions: Third Dawn, Lord Blackthorn's Revenge and Age of Shadows. On Origin's Age of Shadows team page he was listed under the name Evocare. He left Origin in 2004, the year Electronic Arts closed the studio.
Work on World of Warcraft
Chilton joined Blizzard in early 2004 as a senior game designer on World of Warcraft, roughly ten months before the game's November 2004 release. The classic credits list him as one of six game designers. Blizzard's official biography says he led the design of:
- the talent system
- the classes
- items
- the auction house
- the mail system
- combat
- battlegrounds and player-versus-player combat
Many of these systems arrived after launch or were reworked in the patches that followed. The Honor System went live in patch 1.4, and the first battlegrounds, Alterac Valley and Warsong Gulch, arrived in patch 1.5, followed by Arathi Basin in 1.7. Chilton appeared on the developer panels for classes, dungeons, raids and battlegrounds at the first BlizzCon in 2005.

He posted on the official forums as Kalgan. One post preserved on Warcraft Wiki shows his sense of humor: explaining how organized he intended the average guild to be, he drew a line of dashes between two bars and said that organized, no more and no less.
Lead designer and game director
Chilton was one of three lead designers on The Burning Crusade (2007), with Rob Pardo and Jeff Kaplan. When Kaplan moved to a new project in 2009, Chilton was the sole lead designer of Wrath of the Lich King. He then served as game director of World of Warcraft, the person responsible for the vision of the game across design, art and engineering, through Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Draenor and Legion.

In October 2016, shortly after Legion launched, Chilton announced on the forums that he was leaving the World of Warcraft team to focus on another project within Blizzard.
Later career
That project was revealed in 2022 as Warcraft Rumble (first announced as Warcraft Arclight Rumble), a mobile strategy game set in the Warcraft universe. Chilton was one of its two directors, with Vik Saraf. It launched on mobile devices on November 3, 2023, and came to PC in December 2024. In July 2025 Blizzard said the game would receive no new content, though events and fixes would continue.
In-game tributes

Several things in the game are named after Chilton:
- Auctioneer Chilton, one of the auctioneers in the Trader's Hall of Stormwind City. The name fits: Chilton designed the auction house.
- Chilton the reindeer, named in the poem in [Metzen's Letters and Notes], which players read during the Winter Veil quest Metzen the Reindeer.
- [Chilton Wand], a wand that exists in the game files but was never made available to players.
Warcraft Wiki also lists a cheese called Chilton Stilton and a store called Chilton's Magic Shop among the references to him.
