Lady Illucia Barov

This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.

Lady Illucia Barov is the ghost of the Barov family's matriarch, wife of Lord Alexei Barov, who haunts the Shadow Vault in the depths of Scholomance. She fights entirely with shadow magic. She is one of the six instructors whose deaths summon Darkmaster Gandling.

Background

The Barovs were one of the richest noble houses of Lordaeron, holding Caer Darrow, Brill, Tarren Mill and Southshore. When Kel'Thuzad came looking for followers, Illucia and her husband gave the Cult of the Damned their keep and its ancient crypts in return for the promise of immortality. The cult repaid them by killing them. Illucia now teaches in the school her family made possible, as a ghost and a necromancer.

Two of her children are also bound to the place. Her daughter Jandice Barov haunts another vault of the school, and her husband guards the family vault. Her sons Alexi Barov and Weldon Barov survived; one joined the Forsaken and the other the Alliance, and each wants the family deeds that lie in the dungeon.

Abilities

  • Curse of Agony: a curse on everyone near her, dealing shadow damage for 30 seconds.
  • Shadow Shock: an instant blast of shadow damage.
  • Silence: silences nearby players for ten seconds.
  • Fear: sends one player running.
  • Dominate Mind: takes control of a player for a short time.

Strategy

Since every attack she has is shadow magic, shadow resistance is the best defense: a priest's Shadow Protection or a paladin's Shadow Resistance Aura blunts most of her damage. Mages and druids can remove her curses. Silence makes healing harder, so healers should keep the tank topped up between casts rather than wait for an emergency heal, and casters should stand where her silence won't reach all of them at once.

Dominate Mind can turn a player on the group. A priest can dispel it, or the group can crowd-control the controlled player until it wears off. With those handled she dies quickly; she has the least health of the six instructors in our data.

Loot

Drop chances are from our database (patch 1.12). Unlike the other instructors she has no Dungeon Set 1 piece of her own; she drops only from the shared table.

Item Chance
[Deathbone Chestplate] 1.1%
[Necropile Robe] 1.1%
[Cadaverous Armor] 1.1%
[Bloodmail Hauberk] 1.1%
[Burial Shawl] 1.1%
[Hammer of the Vesper] 1.1%
[[forever:item:23200]] 1.1%
[Skin of Shadow] 19%

The chest pieces head four five-piece sets, Deathbone, Necropile, Cadaverous and Bloodmail, whose pieces drop from all six instructors. [[forever:item:23200]] and [[forever:item:23201]] were added in patch 1.10.

Quests

No Classic quest names Illucia. Her death counts toward summoning Gandling, and she drops a [Corruptor's Scourgestone] for the Argent Dawn. The family deeds wanted in Barov Family Fortune and Barov Family Fortune are nearby, though none of them is in her vault.

Later history

Patch 4.0.3a lowered her to level 43. Mists of Pandaria removed her from the school, and the Legacy of Scholomance brought her back in patch 10.1.5. Her living self appears in Hearthstone as Mindrender Illucia.
