Magmus

This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.

Magmus is a molten giant who guards the Iron Hall, the last passage before the emperor's throne room in Blackrock Depths. Before a group can even reach him, it has to light two braziers in the Lyceum to open his doors. Once the fight begins, the statues lining his hall start breathing fire, and the group has to fight the giant while staying out of their flames.

Background

The game's later Adventure Guide says Ambassador Flamelash put Magmus in charge of guarding the throne room of Emperor Dagran Thaurissan. Even that did not put the emperor's mind at ease. Afraid of assassins, Thaurissan also gave the giant control of the fire-breathing statues that line the hall outside his chambers.

When players open the doors to his hall, Magmus warns them off: "Emperor Thaurissan does not wish to be disturbed! Turn back now or face your doom, weak mortals!"

Abilities

  • Fiery Burst: 255 to 345 fire damage to every player in an area.
  • War Stomp: damages nearby players, knocks them back and stuns them for 8 seconds.
  • Fire-breathing statues: once Magmus is in combat, the statues on both sides of the Iron Hall breathe fire about every 10 seconds.

Strategy

Reaching Magmus takes a little work. The Lyceum, the great hall before his, has two braziers that have to be lit with a [Shadowforge Torch]. The torches drop from Shadowforge Flame Keepers. Once both braziers burn, two large doors to the northeast open onto the Iron Hall.

The statues are the main hazard. Their fire covers the space directly in front of them, so the group fights Magmus in the gaps between statues, where the flames don't reach. The tank pulls him into one of those safe spots and holds him there, and everyone else finds a gap of their own. War Stomp's knockback can push players into the line of fire, so it helps to stand with the knockback in mind.

Magmus himself is a straightforward fight. Fiery Burst and the statues both deal fire damage, so fire resistance gear helps the whole group, and the healer should be ready to top up anyone caught in the flames.

Loot

From our database (patch 1.12):

Item Chance
[Magmus Stone] 20%
[Golem Skull Helm] 20%
[[forever:item:22208]] 20%
[[forever:item:22400]] 20%
[[forever:item:22395]] 20%

The [Golem Skull Helm] is a plate helm with strength, stamina and defense, made for tanks. The [Magmus Stone] is an off-hand item with fire resistance. The [[forever:item:22208]], [[forever:item:22400]] and [[forever:item:22395]] came with patch 1.10's dungeon loot update; the libram is for paladins and the totem for shamans.

Quests

No Classic quest asks for Magmus's death or uses his drops. He stands between the group and the emperor, so groups doing The Fate of the Kingdom or The Royal Rescue kill him on the way.

Later history

Magmus received a new model in patch 4.2; the picture above shows the updated look. Warcraft Wiki keeps a small image of his original model, too small to show here.
