Malygos

Malygos the Spell-Weaver is the Dragon Aspect of the blue dragonflight and the eldest of the five Aspects, entrusted by the Titans with guardianship over arcane magic. His flight was nearly wiped out by Deathwing during the War of the Ancients, and he spent ten thousand years in grief and half-madness in his Northrend lair. Malygos never appears in the original World of Warcraft. In Classic his flight is represented by Azuregos in Azshara, by the blue shard of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands, and by his son Arygos at the gates of Ahn'Qiraj.

Biography

The eldest Aspect

The titan Norgannon gave Malygos power over magic and hidden knowledge. He was a playful and curious dragon in the ancient days, a friend of Neltharion, the black Aspect.

That friendship was his undoing. During the War of the Ancients, Neltharion proposed a weapon to destroy the demons, and Malygos helped persuade the other Aspects to pour their power into it. The weapon was the Dragon Soul, and Neltharion, now Deathwing, turned it on his allies. When the blue flight tried to seize it, Deathwing destroyed nearly all of them at a single stroke. Malygos survived, badly injured in body and mind.

Ten thousand years of grief

Blaming himself, Malygos retreated to Coldarra in Northrend and hid in his Nexus for thousands of years. His thoughts turned inward and his body withered. A clutch of blue eggs survived only because the red dragon Korialstrasz found them and kept them safe.

During the Second War era, Korialstrasz, in his mortal guise as the mage Krasus, came to Malygos for help freeing Alexstrasza from the Dragonmaw. He told Malygos that Deathwing still lived and promised that Alexstrasza, the Life-Binder, could help him rebuild his flight. Malygos joined the fight at Grim Batol, and when the Dragon Soul was destroyed, he regained his full strength.

In World of Warcraft

Malygos does not appear in Classic. His dragonflight does.

Azuregos

Azuregos is a level 63 elite blue dragon who guards the Ruins of Eldarath in southeastern Azshara. He and Lord Kazzak were the game's first outdoor world bosses. Lore says Malygos's flight came to Azshara after the Sundering to guard the magic and artifacts buried there, and Azuregos is the dragon Malygos trusted with that duty. Unlike most raid bosses, he will talk to players before they attack him.

The blue scepter shard

When the Scepter of the Shifting Sands was broken, the bronze dragon Anachronos gave one shard to each flight. Malygos charged Azuregos with the blue one. Azuregos considered it nothing but trouble and handed it off to a huge sea creature, Maws.

Players on the Opening of the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj quest line recover it through one of the most complicated chains in the game:

  1. [[forever:quest:8575]] takes his ledger to Narain Soothfancy in Tanaris, a gnome who cannot read Draconic.
  2. Narain's chain involves a pair of scrying goggles, a decoy set in Winterspring, and the eight scattered chapters of Draconic for Dummies, put back together in [[forever:quest:8620]].
  3. [[forever:quest:8728]] asks for 20 Arcanite Bars, 10 Elementium Ore, 10 Azerothian Diamonds and 10 Blue Sapphires to build an arcanite buoy.
  4. [[forever:quest:8729]] has players drop the buoy into the maelstrom in Azshara's Bay of Storms, summon [[forever:npc:15571]], and take the shard from it.

Andorgos and Arygos

The blue flight also sends envoys to Ahn'Qiraj. [[forever:npc:15380]], Malygos's son, flies in with the other Aspects' children during the scene at the Scarab Wall in patch 1.9. Inside the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj, [[forever:npc:15502]] of the Brood of Malygos takes Qiraji artifacts in [[forever:quest:8784]].

Later history

Malygos finally appeared in Wrath of the Lich King, and as a villain. Having recovered his clarity, he concluded that mortal spellcasters were abusing magic and began the Nexus War, redirecting the world's ley lines to his Nexus and attacking the Kirin Tor of Dalaran. Alexstrasza gathered the other flights into the Wyrmrest Accord against him. Players fought him in the Eye of Eternity, a raid fought partly on the backs of red drakes, and killed him. His death left magic without an Aspect until the blue dragon Kalecgos was chosen to succeed him.

Trivia

  • Malygos is the oldest of the Aspects.
  • Arygos shares his father's model in the game.
  • Malygos is voiced by Cam Clarke, who also voiced Medivh in The Burning Crusade.
