Mutanus the Devourer
This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.
Mutanus the Devourer is the last boss of the Wailing Caverns: a giant, pale murloc that crawls out of the Emerald Nightmare to stop anyone from waking the sleeping druid Naralex. He doesn't exist in the dungeon until the group finishes the escort event that ends the run, and he has more health than any other boss there.
Background
Naralex went into the caves under The Barrens to heal the land through the Emerald Dream, the green dragonflight's realm of untouched nature. Instead he was caught by the Emerald Nightmare, a corruption creeping through the Dream, and has been asleep and suffering ever since. His dreams leak into the caves, twisting the animals into deviates and driving most of his followers mad.
Mutanus is that nightmare given flesh. Whatever holds Naralex has set it to guard him, and it appears whenever someone tries to wake him. Its shape is fitting: a colossal albino murloc, the creature that haunts Naralex's worst dreams. Blizzard's guidebook to Kalimdor adds that Mutanus brought things across from the Nightmare that should not exist in the waking world, the Deep Fathom Ring among them.

Abilities
- Naralex's Nightmare: puts a player to sleep until they take damage.
- Terrify: sends a player running in fear for a few seconds.
- Thundercrack: a burst of nature damage around him that briefly stuns everyone close.
He is immune to shadow damage, so shadow priests and warlocks must lean on their other spells.
Strategy
The fight is the end of a longer event.
- Kill the four Fanglords: Lady Anacondra, Lord Cobrahn, Lord Pythas and Lord Serpentis.
- Return to the Disciple of Naralex near the dungeon entrance. He offers to lead the group to his master.
- Escort him through the caverns. He stops along the way, and deviates attack.
- At Naralex's resting place, he begins a ritual to wake the druid. Waves of deviate creatures and ectoplasms rush in, and the group must keep them off the disciple.
- When the ritual is nearly done, Mutanus appears.
Against Mutanus himself, keep the healer and casters out of Thundercrack range, wake slept players with a hit or a dispel, and be ready for the tank to be feared for a moment. A group that survived the waves usually wins. When he falls, Naralex wakes, and he and his disciple take the form of storm crows and fly away.

Loot
Mutanus always drops the Glowing Shard and one of three rare items.

Quests
- The Glowing Shard: the Glowing Shard, a green crystal with something like smoke moving inside it, sends the player to Ratchet to find someone who can explain it. Falla Sagewind identifies it as a piece of the Nightmare and sends Horde players on to Arch Druid Arch Druid Hamuul Runetotem in Thunder Bluff (In Nightmares) and Alliance players to Mathrengyl Bearwalker in Darnassus (In Nightmares).
- His Deviate Hides count toward Deviate Hides for Nalpak.

Later history
A Memory of Mutanus is one of the spirits the Argent Confessor Paletress can summon in Wrath of the Lich King's Trial of the Champion. Mutanus also appears in Hearthstone's Wailing Caverns cards. The 1.12 encounter returned with World of Warcraft Classic in 2019.
