Rattlegore

Rattlegore is a bone golem that guards a chamber below the Great Ossuary in Scholomance. He is the school's gatekeeper: he carries the key to the Viewing Room, so every group that wants to go deeper has to kill him.

Background

Bone golems are stitched together by necromancers from the bones of many dead. Rattlegore is the Scholomance's largest, built and kept by the instructors as a guard. The game says little else about him in Classic. Warcraft Wiki suggests he may be related to the Rattlecage Skeletons of Tirisfal Glades, since his shield is the [Rattlecage Buckler], but that is only speculation.

His lair sits directly under the Great Ossuary, the hall where the plagued hatchlings are kept. Players reach it by the stairs, though some fall through the holes in the hatchling room floor by accident.

Abilities

• War Stomp: damages and stuns everyone near him for five seconds.
• Knock Away: knocks his target back and lowers their threat.
• Strike: a heavy melee hit.

Strategy

Rattlegore is a straightforward melee fight that is mostly about damage. He hits very hard for a level 60 tank. The room around him holds patrolling skeletons, and pulling one of them during the fight can wipe a group, so most groups clear the chamber first. A priest's Shackle Undead is handy if an extra gets in. Melee players need to step back from War Stomp when they can, and healers should be ready for the tank to be knocked away.

Loot

Drop chances are from our database (patch 1.12). Since patch 1.4 he always drops at least one rare.

The [Viewing Room Key] opens the door to the Viewing Room, where Vectus and Marduk Blackpool teach their students. The [Top Half of Advanced Armorsmithing: Volume II] is half of a book that teaches blacksmiths more armor plans; [Shadowcraft Boots] belongs to the rogue's Dungeon Set 1 (see Tier Sets).

Quests

No Classic quest asks for Rattlegore himself, but he is the key to the Argent Dawn's Dawn's Gambit, which needs the Viewing Room open. Like most bosses here he also drops an [Invader's Scourgestone] for the Argent Dawn.

Later history

Rattlegore was one of the few Classic bosses kept in Mists of Pandaria's rebuilt Scholomance. After being destroyed in the Battle for Andorhal in Western Plaguelands, he is reassembled by Darkmaster Gandling in the Chamber of Summoning, and the new fight has him spike players with bones while the group shields itself from piles on the floor. He is also a Hearthstone card in Scholomance Academy.
