Vectus

Vectus is a skeletal mage and one of the main teachers of necromancy at Scholomance. In the Viewing Room he runs the Scourge's most ambitious experiment: breeding a flight of plagued dragons from stolen eggs. He shares the room, and the fight, with the death knight Marduk Blackpool.

Background

The Scourge wanted dragons of its own. Vectus pays the goblin Tinkee Steamboil in the Burning Steppes to smuggle black dragon eggs out of Blackrock Spire, and in the Scholomance he and Marduk raise the hatchlings on the plague. The results, plagued hatchlings, fill the Great Ossuary above Rattlegore.

He is also a teacher in the plain sense. Walking through the Viewing Room, players hear him lecture his students on feeding the dragons "terrified flesh," on torturing prisoners where the dragons can watch, and on the Lich King's timetable. If a player in normal clothes talks to him, he tells them to put on their student's attire and study.

Abilities

• Blast Wave: fire damage to everyone near him, slowing them.
• Flamestrike: a pillar of fire on an area, burning everyone in it for several seconds.

Players also report a burning aura that damages anyone fighting him in melee.

Strategy

The Viewing Room is locked until someone has the key from Rattlegore. Inside, Vectus, Marduk and a large class of students are neutral. Attacking any of them turns the whole room hostile, and the students are tough in their normal form.

The Argent Dawn's [Dawn's Gambit] solves that. When it is used in the room, the device turns the students into weak hostile skeletons that a mage or other area damage clears fast. Groups usually use it from a corner or a doorway, kill the skeletons, then pull Marduk alone before turning to Vectus. Melee players should step out of his Flamestrike and Blast Wave; it is a short fight once the students are gone.

Most of the time Vectus drops only his Corruptor's Scourgestone, which the Argent Dawn exchanges for reputation.

Quests

• Dawn's Gambit: Betina Bigglezink at Light's Hope Chapel puts Dawn's Gambit into the container that once held Vectus's dragon eggs and asks you to use it in the Viewing Room and kill Vectus. The rewards are [Windreaper] or [Dancing Sliver].
• Plagued Hatchlings: the same Argent Dawn officer wants the plagued hatchlings in the Great Ossuary destroyed.

Dawn's Gambit is the end of a chain that starts with Betina Bigglezink and runs through Tinkee Steamboil in the Burning Steppes, where players gather the dragon eggs meant for Vectus. Their container is what carries the device into the school.

Later history

Patch 4.0.3a lowered Vectus to level 42, and Mists of Pandaria removed him when the school was rebuilt. He returned with the Legacy of Scholomance in patch 10.1.5. A living version of him is a Hearthstone card that hatches plagued dragons.
