Scarlet Commander Mograine
This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.
Scarlet Commander Mograine is Renault Mograine, the young paladin who commands the Scarlet Crusade's forces at the Scarlet Monastery. He is the elder son of Alexandros Mograine, the Ashbringer, and the man who betrayed and killed him. In the Cathedral he is the first half of a two-part fight: when he falls, High Inquisitor Whitemane rushes in and raises him from the dead. He is a level 42 elite, and the Cathedral is the monastery's last and hardest wing.
Background
Renault grew up in the shadow of his father, the greatest paladin of the Knights of the Silver Hand, and resented the attention given to his younger brother, Darion Mograine. After the fall of Lordaeron, the Grand Crusader Saidan Dathrohan, secretly the dreadlord Balnazzar in disguise, offered Renault power and rank in the Crusade if he would help kill his father.
Renault told Alexandros that Darion had been taken by the undead and sent him toward Stratholme, into a Scourge ambush. When the Highlord, exhausted, dropped the Ashbringer, Renault picked it up and ran his father through. The blade was corrupted, and Alexandros fell into the service of Kel'Thuzad. Renault got his reward: command of the Scarlet Monastery. His father's adviser, High Inquisitor Fairbanks, survived the ambush to tell the story.
In the monastery Renault rules beside his childhood friend High Inquisitor Whitemane. His lines are short and zealous: he calls intruders infidels to be purified.

Abilities
- Crusader Strike: a strike that makes its target take more Holy damage, stacking up to five times.
- Hammer of Justice: stuns a player for several seconds.
- Retribution Aura: deals Holy damage to anyone who strikes him or his allies.
- Divine Shield: makes him immune to all damage for a short time.
- Lay on Hands: during the fight's second phase he uses it on Whitemane, healing her to full.
Strategy
The fight is in the Crusader's Chapel, at the far end of the Cathedral.
- Clear the whole chapel first, every pew and corner. Only patrols respawn, so take your time. Anything left behind joins the fight.
- Mograine hits hard and stuns the tank, but he doesn't heal himself. Tank him and burn him down; wait out Divine Shield.
- When he dies, Whitemane runs in from behind the altar. At about half her health she puts the whole group into a deep sleep and resurrects Mograine; while the group sleeps he heals her with Lay on Hands, so both are at full health when the fight resumes.
- After the resurrection, most groups kill Whitemane first. She heals both of them, so leaving her alive drags the fight out.

Mograine's Might is a two-handed mace with Spirit and Stamina, long popular with healing paladins. The Aegis of the Scarlet Commander is a heavy shield, the Gauntlets of Divinity are mail gloves with attack power, and the Scarlet Leggings, which Herod also drops, are mail legs with Strength.
Quests
- In the Name of the Light (Alliance): Raleigh the Devout in Southshore wants Mograine dead, along with Houndmaster Loksey, Herod and Whitemane.
- Into The Scarlet Monastery (Horde): Varimathras in Undercity sets the same four targets.
- Hearts of Zeal (Horde): Mograine drops [Heart of Zeal] for Master Apothecary Faranell in Undercity.
Later history
In the comics, Darion Mograine later brings the Corrupted Ashbringer to the monastery, and his father's spirit, still bound to the blade, beheads Renault for his betrayal. In the original game, carrying the Corrupted Ashbringer from Naxxramas into the Cathedral set off a version of this scene. Mists of Pandaria (patch 5.0.4) replaced him with Commander Durand. The original encounter returned with World of Warcraft Classic in 2019.
