Solakar Flamewreath

This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.

Solakar Flamewreath is the dragonspawn keeper of the Rookery, the black dragonflight's hatchery in Upper Blackrock Spire. He only appears at the end of an optional event, and many groups skip him entirely. The room he guards is better known than he is: it is where the guild in the Leeroy Jenkins video was overrun by whelps in 2005.

Background

The Rookery lies beyond the Hall of Binding, where Pyroguard Emberseer's trapped fire is drained to speed the hatching of the eggs. The Dark Iron dwarves once called the room the Hall of Fortune and kept their relics and art there. Now Nefarian's dragonspawn tend masses of black dragon eggs on its floor.

Solakar is the one responsible for them. According to the later Adventure Guide, being trusted with Nefarian's brood is a mixed blessing: he has been warned that he will pay a terrible price for any whelp that dies in his care, or that simply fails to live up to expectations.

Abilities

  • War Stomp: damages and stuns every nearby player for four seconds.

Solakar himself is a simple melee fight. The danger of the encounter is the room.

Strategy

The Rookery's eggs hatch into Rookery Whelps whenever a player walks too close. A few whelps are easy to kill, but a careless group can hatch dozens and be overwhelmed. The eggs come back quickly, so there is no point trying to clear them; the answer is to walk carefully and step on as few as possible.

To start the event, one player loots [Father Flame], a crystal at the far end of the room, surrounded by eggs and guarded by dragonspawn. Groups clear those guards, gather in one spot inside the room to make area attacks easy and avoid line-of-sight problems, and send a player (often a stealthy one, since the hatched whelps won't notice them) to the crystal.

Looting it sets off five waves of two dragonkin each, a mix of Rookery Guardians and Rookery Hatchers. Hatchers are the priority: they run from egg to egg, hatching more whelps into the fight. Once the waves are down, Solakar appears with the yell, "I am here! Now, puny little worms, you will pay for your intrusion!"

Because the event is optional and can go badly, many groups walk past it on the way up the ramp to the Hall of Blackhand.

The Leeroy Jenkins video

In May 2005 a forum thread titled "UBRS (vid) ROOKERY OVERPOWERED! blue please." shared a video on the official forums. In it, the guild PALS FOR LIFE carefully plans its way through the Rookery, until one member, Leeroy, returns from being away, shouts his own name and charges in. The whelps hatch and the group dies. The joke of the thread's title is that the Rookery is easy for a group that doesn't step on the eggs. The clip became one of the best-known videos to come out of any online game; see Leeroy Jenkins.
