The Beast
This is revision 1, from Oct 29, 2026 04:23. See the current page.
The Beast is a huge two-headed core hound that guards the Furnace in Upper Blackrock Spire. Once a minion of Ragnaros, it was captured and tortured by Nefarian's dragonkin until it could be trained as a guard dog. It hits harder than almost anything else in the spire, and it hides a surprise: a gnome it swallowed is still alive inside it.
Background
Core hounds are the fiery dogs of Ragnaros, found in the depths of the mountain and in Molten Core. The later Adventure Guide says Nefarian's dragonkin take great delight in torturing the Firelord's captured minions. One hound stayed sane enough through its agony to be retrained, and its savagery made it the perfect guard for the upper levels of the spire.
The Beast's room, the Furnace, lies past Blackrock Stadium, opposite the entrance to Blackwing Lair, and across a short bridge from General Drakkisath's throne room. It also holds groups of orcs and dragonspawn.
Its most famous victim is Finkle Einhorn, a gnome inventor who was testing a lava-proof suit near the mountain's molten pits when the Beast swallowed him whole. The suit kept him alive, and he has been living in its belly for weeks.

Abilities
- Berserker Charge: charges a random player, damaging and knocking them back.
- Terrifying Roar: sends nearby players running in fear for five seconds.
- Flamebreak: fire damage to everyone nearby, with a knockback.
- Immolate: sets a random player on fire.
- Fire Blast and Fireball: fire damage on its current target.
Strategy
The Beast hits extremely hard and can kill a player in cloth in two or three hits. Its roar and charge both pull it off the tank for a moment, so groups often bring two tanks who both keep building threat. Healers stand back, out of reach of the roar.
The room is crowded, so the Beast's knockbacks can throw players into other packs. Groups clear the Furnace before the pull and tank the Beast with its back away from the room's edges.
The main requirement is enough healing for the tank to survive the melee damage. After the kill, a skinner with high enough skill can skin the Beast to free the gnome.

Finkle's Skinner is a dagger that adds 10 to skinning skill. Skinning the Beast needs a skill of 310, above the cap of 300, so a skinner needs this dagger or Zul'Gurub's Zulian Slicer to do it. Seeping Willow is a two-handed mace. The [Lightforge Spaulders] belong to the paladin's Dungeon Set 1, and the [Ace of Beasts] is one of the eight cards of the Darkmoon Faire's Beasts deck.
Skinning the Beast can also give the [Pristine Hide of the Beast], an epic hide.
Quests
- Finkle Einhorn, At Your Service!: when the Beast is skinned, Finkle Einhorn climbs out and gives players the [Glowing Hunk of the Beast's Flesh] to take to Malyfous Darkhammer of the Thorium Brotherhood in Everlook, Winterspring.
- Malyfous then offers to craft armor from the Pristine Hide of the Beast: Cap of the Scarlet Savant, Leggings of Arcana and Breastplate of Bloodthirst.

Trivia
- Finkle Einhorn was renamed Pip Quickwit in World of Warcraft Classic in 2021, and his skinning knife became Pip's Skinner.
- The Beast was removed in patch 6.0.2, and the new Upper Spire has its offspring, the Son of the Beast.
