Vol'jin

Vol'jin is the chieftain of the Darkspear trolls and a shadow hunter, a troll who serves the loa (the troll spirits) as both warrior and priest. His tribe owes its survival to Thrall, and in return Vol'jin brought the Darkspear into the Horde. In Classic he stands in Grommash Hold in Orgrimmar as one of the Warchief's advisors and the leader of the playable trolls.

Biography

Vol'jin is the son of Sen'jin, the witch doctor who led the Darkspear tribe on the remote Darkspear Islands in the South Seas. The Darkspear were a small, exiled tribe, and when Vol'jin grew up they were being worn down by human soldiers of the Alliance and constant murloc raids.

During the Third War, Thrall's fleet was driven onto the islands by a storm. The orcs helped the trolls fight off the humans, but the murlocs captured orcs, trolls and humans alike and dragged them to their caverns. Thrall broke free, and Sen'jin died helping the prisoners escape. Vol'jin, now chief of the tribe, pledged the Darkspear's loyalty to Thrall to repay the debt.

The tribe followed the orcs to Kalimdor and settled on the Echo Isles off the coast of Durotar. When Admiral Daelin Proudmoore's fleet attacked, Vol'jin helped Rexxar and his companions evacuate the Darkspear and strike back at the Kul Tiran ships.

Peace on the islands did not last. Vol'jin's childhood friend Zalazane, a witch doctor, used dark voodoo to enslave many of the Darkspear. Rather than lose the whole tribe, Vol'jin ordered a retreat to the mainland and founded Sen'jin Village, named after his father, as a base for taking the islands back. Thrall then called him to Orgrimmar, and the fight against Zalazane fell to Master Gadrin.

In World of Warcraft

Vol'jin stands in Grommash Hold in Orgrimmar, near Thrall. He is a level 60 boss and one of the racial leaders that Alliance raids hunt for honor. He gives no quests directly, but his orders drive several storylines.

The Darkspear in Durotar

Troll players start in the Valley of Trials and soon reach Sen'jin Village, the village Vol'jin founded. There Master Gadrin gives the quest Zalazane: cross to the Echo Isles, kill the witch doctor Zalazane among his hexed trolls, and bring back his head. The Darkspear's struggle for their homeland is the main story of troll starting content.

Trollbane

In Trollbane, the troll Nimboya in Stranglethorn explains that Vol'jin wants the troll-slaying sword Trol'kalar taken from the ruins of Stromgarde so the Horde can use it against the trolls of Zul'Gurub. The quest sends players north to the hunter Zengu, who oversees the job from Hammerfall in the Arathi Highlands.

Later history

  • In Cataclysm, Vol'jin led the Darkspear back to the Echo Isles and killed Zalazane. He clashed openly with Garrosh Hellscream and moved his people out of Orgrimmar, warning Garrosh that he would one day watch him fall.
  • In Mists of Pandaria, Garrosh's agents tried to murder him. He survived, as told in the novel Vol'jin: Shadows of the Horde by Michael A. Stackpole, and helped lead the rebellion against Garrosh. After the Siege of Orgrimmar, Thrall and the other leaders named Vol'jin Warchief.
  • In Legion, Vol'jin was mortally wounded at the Broken Shore. Before he died, he named Sylvanas Windrunner as the next Warchief.

Trivia

  • His father Sen'jin appears in Warcraft III's orc campaign. Vol'jin himself appears in The Frozen Throne's bonus campaign, The Founding of Durotar, alongside Rexxar.
  • During Brewfest in later patches he appears in Durotar to watch the festivities.
  • Patch 1.7 strengthened all faction leaders, Vol'jin included.
