King Gordok

King Gordok is the ruler of the Gordok ogres and the final boss of Dire Maul North. "Gordok" is a title as much as a name: by ogre law, whoever kills the king takes his place. Players who defeat him while sparing his henchmen are proclaimed the new kings of the Gordok and receive a tribute of loot and buffs, the reward at the heart of the famous Dire Maul tribute run.

Background

According to World of Warcraft: Chronicle, a Gordok king led his people across the sea to Kalimdor after the Second War. The Gordunni ogres settled in the ruins of Eldre'Thalas and turned the city into a gladiatorial arena. The present king was once an ogre named Ulrok. The game's Adventure Guide tells how he took the throne: he talked a dozen of the clan's strongest warriors into challenging the old king all at once, and when the brawl had left most of them dead or wounded, he cut down the survivors and the exhausted king. The ogres still speak quietly of the "Day of Da Blood."

The Chronicle adds that whispers from the Emerald Nightmare later drove King Gordok to madness and slaughter. In Year 25 the Horde came to Dire Maul to wipe out the Gordunni there.

Abilities

  • Berserker Charge: charges a random player, throwing them into the air.
  • Mortal Strike: a heavy blow that halves healing on the tank.
  • Sunder Armor: lowers the tank's armor, stacking up to five times.
  • War Stomp: damages and stuns everyone within 5 yards.

He fights beside Cho'Rush the Observer, who heals him and casts at the group.

Strategy

The tank holds Gordok away from the rest of the group so War Stomp only catches melee players, and the healer watches for the Mortal Strike and Sunder Armor stacks. One player keeps Cho'Rush busy and interrupts his heals. When the king dies, Cho'Rush gives up at once.

The tribute run

On a tribute run, the group kills King Gordok and as few of his henchmen as possible. Groups slip past the patrols of Guard Fengus, freeze Guard Slip'kik in a repaired trap, and send Captain Kromcrush away from his post with a disguise, then fight only the king. When he dies, Cho'Rush summons Mizzle the Crafty, who crowns the group with King of the Gordok and spawns the Gordok Tribute chest. It holds one item for each of Guard Mol'dar, Fengus, Slip'kik, Kromcrush and Cho'Rush still alive. A full chest can hold blue items found only there, and rarely the epic two-handed axe [Treant's Bane]. The surviving guards give two-hour buffs, and Stomper Kreeg opens his bar.

A practiced group could finish the run in a few minutes, which made it one of the most popular routines of the Classic endgame.
