Rexxar

Rexxar, the Champion of the Horde, is a half-orc, half-ogre beastmaster of the Mok'Nathal clan who prefers the company of animals to that of people. He saved the young nation of Durotar from Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, then went back to the wilderness. In Classic he roams Desolace with his bear Misha, and Horde players seek him out to begin the long quest chain that opens Onyxia's Lair.

Biography

Rexxar was born on Draenor among the Mok'Nathal, a small clan of mixed orc and ogre blood that neither race welcomed. He left his pacifist people to join the old Horde and crossed the Dark Portal in the First War, but years of slaughter and betrayal, first by Gul'dan and then by Ner'zhul, sickened him. After the fall of Draenor he left the Horde and wandered alone. In Feralas he found an orphaned bear cub beside its dead mother, named her Misha, and the two have traveled together ever since.

The founding of Durotar

On one of his journeys through Kalimdor, Rexxar carried a dying orc's last message to Thrall in Orgrimmar. He stayed to help, and soon found evidence that human soldiers from Kul Tiras were raiding the coast. With the troll Rokhan and the pandaren brewmaster Chen Stormstout, he helped Vol'jin's Darkspear escape the attacks on the Echo Isles, rescued Cairne Bloodhoof's son Baine from the centaur to win the tauren to the cause, and took command of the Stonemaul ogres of Dustwallow Marsh by defeating their warlord, Kor'gall, in battle.

The Kul Tiran fleet belonged to Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, Jaina Proudmoore's father, who had come to finish the orcs. The Horde struck Theramore, and Rexxar and his companions fought through to the admiral and killed him. Thrall offered him a home in Durotar. Rexxar declined, promising to come whenever the Horde needed him, named the ogre Mok'Morokk as chieftain of the Stonemaul, and walked back into the wilds.

In World of Warcraft

Rexxar is a level 62 elite who walks the road through Desolace between the Stonetalon Mountains and Feralas, with Misha at his side. Because he never stops moving, players often have to ride up and down the road to find him.

The Onyxia attunement

Thrall's quest The Champion of the Horde sends Horde players to find Rexxar, who believes there is a way into the lair of Onyxia. The chain that follows is one of the longest in the game:

1. The Testament of Rexxar: Rexxar hands over [Rexxar's Testament] and sends players to the illusionist Myranda the Hag in the Western Plaguelands.
2. Oculus Illusions: Myranda needs a pack full of black dragonspawn eyes from Upper Blackrock Spire to craft the illusion.
3. Emberstrife: Disguised as a dragon, players speak with the drake Emberstrife in Dustwallow Marsh, who sets them a series of trials against other dragonflights.
4. Ascension...: Players take a medallion to General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire, who unknowingly completes the enchantment.
5. Blood of the Black Dragon Champion: Players kill General Drakkisath, take his blood back to Rexxar, and receive the [Drakefire Amulet], the key to Onyxia's Lair.

The Stonemaul

Rexxar's choice of chieftain went badly. In Dustwallow Marsh, Overlord Mok'Morokk boasts that Rexxar made him leader of the Stonemaul, but he is a selfish tyrant. The black dragonflight has driven the clan from its home, and in Overlord Mok'Morokk's Concern he sends players back to the Stonemaul Ruins for his grog, snuff and strongbox. Mok'Morokk is later overthrown by the ogre Tharg.

Later history

• In The Burning Crusade, Rexxar went to the Blade's Edge Mountains in Outland, defended Thunderlord Stronghold, and looked for what was left of his people.
• He later joined the hunters of the Unseen Path in Legion and fought for the Horde again in Battle for Azeroth.

Trivia

• Rexxar is the hero of The Founding of Durotar, the bonus campaign of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (2003).
• He is the hunter hero in Hearthstone, and Misha appears there as one of his summons.
• In World of Warcraft: The Comic, Onyxia is killed by other heroes, so the Horde attunement chain is not considered canon.
