Tailoring is the crafting profession that sews cloth into cloth armor, bags, shirts and robes. It is the one crafting profession with no gathering partner: tailors use the cloth that drops from humanoid enemies, which every character collects while leveling. In Classic, tailors made the bags everyone needed, the Mooncloth that raids depended on, and some of the best caster gear of the era, including the mage-only [Robe of the Archmage].
What tailoring does
A tailor needs only cloth, thread and dye bought from a trade supplier, and can sew anywhere. Raw cloth comes in five tiers: [Linen Cloth], [Wool Cloth], [Silk Cloth], [Mageweave Cloth] and [Runecloth]. Most recipes first turn cloth into bolts, from the [Bolt of Linen Cloth] to the [Bolt of Runecloth], and then sew the bolts into finished items.
Tailors make:
- Cloth armor for mages, priests and warlocks.
- Bags, from the [Linen Bag] at the start to the 14-slot [Runecloth Bag] and the 16-slot [Mooncloth Bag]. Bags were the tailor's steadiest income, since every new character and alt wanted more bag space.
- Specialty bags, such as the [[forever:item:21340]] for warlocks' soul shards and the [[forever:item:22251]] for herbs.
- Shirts and fun clothing, like the [Brown Linen Shirt] and the [White Wedding Dress], which made tailoring popular with role-players.
- Materials for other crafts: [Mooncloth] and bolts of cloth for leatherworkers, engineers and others.
Trainers and skill ranks
Tailoring follows the four Classic ranks: Apprentice (to 75, level 5), Journeyman (to 150, level 10), Expert (to 225, level 20) and Artisan (to 300, level 35). Artisan training is offered in two capitals and by two masters in the wilds:
- Georgio Bolero in Duncan's Textiles in Stormwind City, and Josef Gregorian in Undercity.
- Timothy Worthington on Theramore Isle in Dustwallow Marsh for the Alliance, and Daryl Stack in Tarren Mill in Hillsbrad Foothills for the Horde.

Leveling route in outline
Tailoring is the cheapest crafting profession to level for a character who levels at the same time, since cloth drops on its own. A common route:
- 1 to 75: [Bolt of Linen Cloth], linen bags, shirts and Linen Cloaks.
- 75 to 150: [Bolt of Woolen Cloth], Heavy Woolen gloves and pants, and woolen bags.
- 150 to 200: [Bolt of Silk Cloth], Azure Silk pieces, [Small Silk Pack] and Crimson Silk.
- 200 to 260: [Bolt of Mageweave], Black Mageweave pieces such as [Black Mageweave Vest], and [Shadoweave Robe] and other Shadoweave.
- 260 to 300: [Bolt of Runecloth], [Runecloth Belt], [Runecloth Bag] and [Runecloth Robe], with Runecloth gloves and headbands for the last points.
Mageweave and runecloth were also traded for reputation through cloth donation quests in the capitals, so tailors competed with other players for them.
Mooncloth and Felcloth
The most valuable thing a tailor in Classic could make was [Mooncloth]. It is made from [Felcloth], which drops from satyrs and demons in Felwood and other high-level zones. The transformation, Mooncloth, works only at a moonwell, and it has a cooldown of several days, so each tailor could make only a few pieces a week.

Mooncloth went into the [Mooncloth Bag], the Mooncloth armor set such as [Mooncloth Robe] and [Mooncloth Circlet], and the [Bottomless Bag], an 18-slot bag. It was also needed by players handing in quests for their Naxxramas tier set, which made it valuable to the whole server, not just to tailors. Tailors with a free cooldown sold Mooncloth for a good profit, and many kept a tailoring alt just for that.
Best-known recipes and products
- The three epic robes: [Robe of the Archmage] for mages, [Truefaith Vestments] for priests and [Robe of the Void] for warlocks. Each is restricted to its class and needs elemental essences and runecloth. [Pattern: Robe of the Archmage] drops from Firebrand Pyromancers in Blackrock Spire, and [Pattern: Truefaith Vestments] from Balnazzar in Stratholme.
- [Gloves of Spell Mastery]: epic gloves for casters, from the rare world drop [Pattern: Gloves of Spell Mastery].
- Flarecore set: [Flarecore Robe], [Flarecore Mantle], [Flarecore Gloves] and [Flarecore Leggings], fire resistance gear made with Molten Core materials and sold through the Thorium Brotherhood.
- Bloodvine set: [Bloodvine Vest], [Bloodvine Leggings] and [Bloodvine Boots], made with patterns from the Zandalar Tribe in Zul'Gurub and worn by mages and warlocks for spell hit.
- Bags: the [Runecloth Bag], [Mooncloth Bag] and [Bottomless Bag], and the warlock's [[forever:item:21342]], which needed materials from Molten Core.
- [Wisdom of the Timbermaw]: a belt for healers, from a Timbermaw Hold reputation pattern.
Tailoring had no specialization in Classic. The trainers called "Master Shadoweave Tailor" in Stormwind and Undercity only sell Shadoweave patterns; the Mooncloth, Shadoweave and Spellfire specializations came with The Burning Crusade.
Tailoring and enchanting
With no gathering partner, tailoring is usually paired with another crafting profession. The classic pairing is Enchanting: tailors produce a steady stream of uncommon cloth items while leveling, and an enchanter can disenchant them into the dust and essences enchanting needs. Cloth-wearing raiders often chose tailoring for the epic robes and Bloodvine, and alchemists sometimes paired it with Alchemy to supply their guild with both potions and bags.
